Rhacel Parreñas, author of Children of Global Migration: Transnational Families and Gendered Woes weaves three themes throughout her book: the impact of neoliberal global economic policies on the migration decisions of females in poorer underdeveloped countries; the ways in which gender roles, and cultural practices and beliefs about gender roles exacerbate the care issues and well being of the children left behind by migrant parents, particularly mothers; and family reunification issues, immigration policies and the push-pull  experiences of low wage migrant labor in receiving countries.  Write a Critical Response Essay summarizing these themes and the author’s success in presenting them, as well as her contribution in this work to our understanding of transnational migration issues.

One of the biggest obstacles refugees and immigrant parents report is raising their children in a new, unfamiliar culture. Additionally, kids tend to pick up English much faster than their parents.

With regards to school, parents often feel disappointed to see their children struggling to keep up in class. Actually  many parents report bullying and discrimination as a result of cultural differences. They place kids by their age rather than by their ability.  Those who are unable to speak English, it’s virtually impossible to keep up. To add further insult to injury, parents may not have the education or language skills to assist their children.
