Warm- Up Activity 6.1: How to Create a Blog Entry
Blogs are web-based journals that typically present an individual’s thoughts and perspective about a particular topic. They go beyond just an online diary though. Many blogs are written to help people who may be experiencing similar situations that the blogger has experienced, or in the case of the helping professions assisted individuals in addressing issues. Blogs are also used to chronicle family or life events, host photographs, and share ideas, recipes, jokes, insights, reviews and so much more.
Preparing an effective blog requires you to organize your information. Blogs are also frequently updated, in some cases daily, so you will need to post new entries routinely. Blog posts should be succinct and to the point. Lastly, blogs lend themselves to more casual or informal writing, but you should still be cognizant of your grammar, punctuation, and overall readability.
A well-written blog attracts readers’ attention beginning with the title.
Next, the main point is presented in the first paragraph. Your introduction should describe the problem to the readers and provide a bit of history to put it into perspective. Next, the body of the blog explains solutions and strategies that address the problem. The body can be written in paragraphs, with bullets, numbered lists, multiple headings, or a combination of these formatting types.
The conclusion of the blog post typically is a restatement of the problem that was addressed and strategies/solutions involved. It may include a call to action for the reader to further engage in research.
You may or may not wish to invite comments on your blog. Allowing your audience to comment on your blog posts is the best way to develop a dialogue with your readers. Be aware, however, that you will need to monitor comments closely to ensure spam or inappropriate content is not added to your comments area.
Additionally, it is important that your tone of writing be respectful of other cultures and opinions given that you are presenting your blog to a worldwide audience. It is also critical that you provide the proper citations and references for any of the source material you have used to prepare your blog.
