TACKLING AT 1:THE MEDIA PACKAGEWHY THIS TASK?• Can you get your message out there?• News print; Blog; Facebook; Twitter; websites; other platforms• Take a journal article and create a media package• Media release; facts sheet; strategy (rationale)• In the real world you might need to take a report and use it as the basis for getting amessage out about your organisation’s workCHOOSE FROM ONE OF THE ARTICLES PROVIDEDWHERE TO START• Select an article of interest to you from the articles provided in the AT1 web page• Watch the recordings in WEEKS 2 AND 3 CONTENT about working with the media• Decide what ANGLE you are going to take (refer to recordings week 2)• Week 2 activities will also help you prepare for this aspect• Review any other resources provided to help you tackle this taskRESOURCES TO HELP YOU PREPARECREATE A MEDIA RELEASE• This is the key to a good media package• What is your purpose? Target audience?• What angle/s will you take? Use one of Lupton’s angles as your guide.• What key messages do you want to get out?• Write in plain language• Use language and descriptors that will resonate with your intended audience• While you would normally seek a quote from the author, I do NOT want you to harass the authors forquotes. So I give you permission to pretend you have spoken to the first author and then make up thequote. You would of course not do this in the field but this assignment is an exercise to learn the skills so itis fine to do this just this once.• Do not reference information in the body of the media release… instead, repeat the information andreference it on the Fact Sheet.• If you send a photo make sure you attribute it so the journalist knows it is not breeching copyright.• Include contact details on your media release and make sure it looks professional and is perfectly edited…ABSOLUTELY NO ERRORS OR TYPOS.• This media release is written and delivered to the journalist/media outlet to encourage one of their teamto write a story based on your media releaseSunSmart media release (www.sunsmart.com.au)CREATE A FACT SHEET• This is usually a 1 – 2 pager designed to provide the journalist with background informationto help them construct the story for print• Help them do their research by providing useful facts …accurately referenced• Use bullet points and reference each bullet point then put a full reference list at the end ofthe fact sheet on the same page• Sub headings might help you organise the facts into user friendly chunks• This information is effectively written for the journalistSTRATEGY STATEMENT (RATIONALE)• This statement is basically a rationale explaining to your tutor/marker what you have done and why.• What have you done to increase the chances of you getting this story out there?• Where/when would you release this package and why?• What angle/s have you taken in constructing the story?• What imagery, quotes, photos/photo opportunities?• Would you utilise social media to expand the reach? Hashtags?• Anything else you would do?AND FINALLY…• This task trains you to decide on key messages.• It asks you to write a media release converting a sophisticated document/article into astory written with broader appeal for the masses.• Deciding on the key messages is crucial… so is the angle/s and the title.• Developing and demonstrating this skill will stand you in good stead whenever youneed to get a message out in various forms.• Be professional …and above all be interesting!• More questions? Post them on the Cloud discussion board.• Please note your work will be run through the Turnitin software. Any evidence ofplagiarism will be dealt with according to the Faculty’s strict regulations.• Save your package as one PDF document not 3 separate docs and upload it to theDropbox by Thursday 8 April by 8pm.
