Assessment 1: Group Proposal and Pitch Presented in class on week eight – 12th April (30%) You can prerecord a PowerPoint presentation with a voice over if you think there will be issues with doing it live. The Q&A will be live, and you need to have your microphones working for that. Summary: A five-minute group presentation (pitch) of the proposed documentary project to peers and tutors using supporting visual materials. A PowerPoint presentation with some illustrations and/or video clips would be appropriate. The pitch/presentation will provide evidence of your ability to communicate effectively a well-researched, coherent documentary concept that is achievable in the given time period. The proposal will assess your theoretical understanding of documentary modes and techniques and industrial practices such as seeking consents and permissions.  The presentation will be followed by questions from the audience. The pitch should not include more than one minute of video material. Avoid showing a lot of material by other filmmakers. Guidelines: what the pitch should include: The pitch needs to sell your idea. Normally you do a pitch in order to get funding for your idea. You need to be persuasive and the tone needs to be right. 1. Title Have a title, which catches people’s attention and sums up the idea. 2. Duration of Programme 3. Slot or strand Does it fit in to a strand (e.g. Panorama, ‘Storyville’ or ‘Unreported World’ which are series of one off TV documentaries)? Or is it a one-off film? Is the film being made for a particular organization or event?  Are you making a film for a specific audience? 4. Short Synopsis Be able to sum up your idea in a sentence. For example: Female prisoners experience the liberating effect of creative writing with the help of inspirational Poet Leah thorn. 5. Quotations Sometimes it works well to start your pitch with an arresting quote or fact/statistic e.g. ‘Every three seconds somebody somewhere in the UK buys a Mills & Boon romance novel’. 6. Main summary of film. This should cover: Who What When Where Why How? Who are your characters? Why will we care about them? What is special about your story? Where does your story take place? Why would anyone want to watch it? 7. What is your approach –think about the best way to tell the story? (Polemic, observational, poetic etc) What devices will you be using – interviews, voice over, onscreen presenter, graphics etc. 8. How will the story develop? (Will there be a climax, dilemma or breaking point?) What is the visual style? 9. If appropriate include the following: What is your relationship to the story – are you part of the story or not? Or is this someone else’s story? Do you have unique or special access or experience? Is the story built from opposing arguments or is this a personally authored film (giving a subjective view of the filmmaker e.g. Michael Moore, Nick Broomfield)? 10. Do you have permission to film the characters or location? If not, how do you intend to approach getting permission. It is not idea, but if you don’t yet have access to characters, you can talk about hypothetical characters. 11. Name of Proposers E.g. ©Suzanne Cohen Submission The pitch should be presented in class on week eight on 12th April. Please email the presentation before 10am. If you are unable to do this, you will need to apply for mitigating circumstances. If you have not prepared your presentation in PowerPoint please export it as a PDF. If you think technical issues will prevent you presenting smoothly you are welcome to pre-record the presentation in advance and to share a video file before 10am. Communication The purpose of the presentation is to try out your idea on an audience and to give and receive constructive feedback. Your presentation will be assessed with special emphasis on the following: * Clear illustration of the key points, and talk about the details * Well prepared high quality visuals * Supporting materials used appropriately to help explain the concept * Voice quality: rate, volume, articulation, enthusiasm. * Positive humour is used appropriately. * The speaker gives the audience time to think. * The speaker responds well to questions. * Clear and concise summary of your Digital Video proposal Please see Weblearn for materials on proposal writing and sample proposals:
