One of the central themes of this course has been “globalization” – what the word means, and how it has both positively and negatively impacted the world that we live in today. For your final writing assignment, you will use one of the following two thesis statements to prepare a well-argued paper about globalization.
Option 1: Globalization has had a highly positive impact on the world we live in today.
Option 2: Globalization has had a highly negative impact on the world we live in today.
For this first stage of your final research paper, you need to decide on which of the two thesis statements (listed above) you will choose to build your final paper around. In addition to writing down which thesis statement you will choose, I would also like to see a brief outline. This can consist of a few bullet points that explain HOW you will support your argument for/against the impact of globalization.
What made you choose one statement over the other?
What (from either your personal experience or readings about globalization) made you come to this conclusion?
Keeping in mind that this is a history paper, is there a particular time period you would like to focus on? Remember that your primary sources need to come from two different centuries.
Is there one topic that you gravitate towards? Some possible topics around which a research paper on the benefits/negatives of globalization might be drawn from the following list. Note that some of these topics are positive, some are negative, and some could be interpreted in more than one way:
Spread of knowledge and information from different parts of the world
Diseases and healthcare/medicines
Technology
Wealth
The environment
Competition/innovation/creativity
Human rights
Free market economy
Class discrepancies
Spread of cultures, including languages, food, art, etc.
Growth of some cultures, disappearance of others.
I will also be reordering you for the whole paper.
