INTRUCTIONS BELOW
This is an exercise in critical analysis. Organize your ideas by themes, into paragraphs, and guided by a thesis statement such as, “This paper examines the role of hyper-masculinity in the film So and So” or “In this essay, I will compare and contrast XYZ as portrayed in the film So and So.” You have flexibility, but it might help significantly if you identify, up front, one core theme to examine, discuss, compare, explore, critique, challenge, unpack, or support. Your paper should be 750-1000 words.
Do’s
Consider which questions the movie addresses about sexuality, race, social class, gender expression, and/or other LGBTQIA+ themes. You do not have to answer the questions, as critical thought is sometimes rooted in the discussion about the questions.
How is the role of intersectionality showed in the film, and to what extent is the conflict or resolution of the film connected to these intersecting identities?
What concepts from the film are consistent with the lessons you learned in this class?
Run spell check and grammar check.
Include a citation for the movie if you decide to quote. No citation is needed otherwise.
Don’ts
Do not retell or summarize the movie. Go over every sentence and ask, “Would someone who has seen this film already know this?” I have seen every movie multiple times.
Quote little or not at all. Unless a statement is so poetic, prophetic, or profound that you need to capture it, use your own words.
No judgment, mere opinion, or personal storytelling. This usually looks like, “That is just wrong. I was so pissed when I was watching the movie. I did not like seeing that because it reminded me of the time my cousin told me so and so.”
Additional directions to go, but not required:
Identify a couple of controversial concepts, new to you, or have many sides to argue.
What are both sides of the main issue from the film?
What are the financial, political, social, and psychological implications of what you saw in the film?
Support your position with statistics or research from online or course sources.
Conclude your discussion by mentioning something significant you learned from the movie.
Consider the most powerful or pivotal scene from the film? How is this scene connected to your thesis?
