The assignment: Write a two- to three-page (double spaced) paper detailing your thoughts, observations, and reactions to the music, the performers, and the atmosphere of the event as a whole. The best reviews will use terminology and ideas from the textbook and class lectures. They will spend some time analyzing each piece or work performed. Finally, they will reflect on the experience as a whole. Below, I have included several full-length performances of some of the most popular works in western history. I have a smattering of young [National Youth Orchestra] and old performers, new and classic [Beethoven’s Ninth] performances, famous [Leonard Bernstein] and obscure conductors. Unless you recognize a composer or title immediately, I recommend spending a few minutes scanning through a few pieces. You’ll never actually have the option in real life of deciding mid-performance whether you want to start watching a performance from the beginning!! Also, I have included several shorter concerto performances at the bottom of the list; it will take TWO of those performances to create a single concert review paper. However, the benefits will be a natural intermission between two compositions as well as a chance to hear at least two of the most popular works ever written in one of the most popular live genres.
Since much less of your paper will be about the overall atmosphere and the concert hall (you can still make a few observations here and there), more of your paper will have to detail the specifics of performance, timbre, form, and orchestration.
