Write a 10-12 page paper that critically and empirically examines a prominent issue, debate, or dimension of the Palestinian-Israeli or the Arab-Israeli conflict. Your paper must formulate and answer a research question. All papers must also engage with counterarguments. You need to use a minimum of 10 scholarly sources, such as journal articles or university press books.
A good paper is one that asks a question that permits analytical and empirical reasoning such as: why has the right grown so powerful in Israel, why has Hamas developed strong popular support, why are relations between Arab and Jewish communities contentious in some places but amicable in others, does coeducation increase tolerance among Jewish and Arab communities, does intolerant/violent Hamas media programming increase violence, why has Israel politically incorporated some non-Jewish groups but not others, or why were relations between Israel and Egypt so conflictual between 1948 and 1973? You may also find the following article a useful example when thinking about what sort of paper topics is appropriate:
Longo, Canetti, and Hite-Rubin (2014). “A Checkpoint Effect? Evidence from a Natural Experiment on Travel Restrictions in the West Bank.” (American Journal of Political Science)
Longo, Canetti, and Hite-Rubin (2014) examine the effects of checkpoints – whether they increase or decrease security. Checkpoints are pervasive in the West Bank. While some contend that checkpoints increase security for Israelis, others argue that they actually generate resentment, making the intended beneficiaries of such policies less safe.
Your paper may not be normative nor may it be only descriptive. Normative papers generally explore ‘should’ questions, such as the UN should, Israel should, or the Palestinians should. You may also not write ‘fault’ papers, e.g., the British created the conflict in Israel-Palestine. Papers of this nature do not teach us very much. A useful framework is to think about asking ‘why’ questions, which typically encourage a more analytical lens. I strongly suggest that you speak with me about your proposed paper topic. You should follow the Chicago Manual of Style Author-Date format.
