Make sure to address the issues presented by the both Smith and Collins. Discuss how mid-century feminist theory, including the scholars we read, was shaped by the social and political context from which it emerged.
Topic 2: Explore the central concepts of queer theory. Try to be comprehensive in your discussion of the thinkers, and consider the degree to which social context has shaped the rise of queer theory. Make sure to include a discussion of Butler, Katz and Rich. How are these theorists similar and different from other theoretical traditions that focus on identity politics, such as feminist theory and critical race theory?
Topic 3: Discuss critical race theory, paying special attention to Asante’s critiques of Eurocentric constructions of knowledge. How does this approach to knowledge in critical race theory shape the work of Gloria Anzaldúa and/or McIntosh? Discuss key issues raised by Anzaldúa and or McIntosh and explain how they are connected to the larger goals of critical race theory.
Topic 4: Explore the work of Michel Foucault. Explain his understanding of the nature of truth, how does he define truth and how he understands the nature of the human pursuit of it.
