There are two questions that need to be answered in this assignment. Each question has to be a minimum of 250 words, double spaced. There will be a short story or two that need to be included in each question showing the knowledge I have on the stories. I will provide the specific story or stories that need to be included in the question below the question. When answering the questions there needs to be quotes and information from the stories showing that I have knowledge and read the material. 1) Give examples of two stories where the author provides language for a dog or cat “talking” or “thinking.” Does the author attempt to imagine animal consciousness, or is the voice thoroughly human? As a reader, do you find this “animal speak” insightful, meaningful, moving, silly and/or entertaining? The two stories for this question are Saki “Tobermory” and Anton Chekhov, “Kashtanka”
2) The old Welsh tale of Gelert the Dog establishes a long tradition of dogs as unconditionally faithful. Choose another story where a dog or a cat is loyal and helpful to a person. If you select a cat story, you may want to point out the somewhat unusual nature of such feline fidelity and protectiveness. Or maybe that’s just our prejudice about cats. Can cats also be as faithful and brave as Gelert?
