Explore the extent to which the digital economy has impacted the activities and working practices of an organisation of your choice

  • Write a 2500-word paper ( 80% of available marks)

Your topic is:

“Explore the extent to which the digital economy has impacted the activities and working practices of an organisation of your choice”

Please note that your work should be focused on the implications of the digital economy for your chosen organisation, not on the nature of the technologies themselves.

You should make sure that you include a discussion of the specific business model that your organisation has developed. You can choose either a new digital venture or an adaptation of a more “traditional” operating model.

While there is no set format – the structure and style of your work is entirely your own choice – you may find it helpful to use the following notes to guide your research and writing:

Introduction (250 words) Explain what is significant about your chosen organisation and why you chose to focus on it.

Context (500 words) Discuss how developments in the digital economy as a whole are impacting upon organisations operating within that sector.

Focus (1500 words) Explain the specific business model of your chosen organisation and discuss how successful it has been in dealing with the particular challenges and opportunities it has faced/is facing.

Conclusion (250 words) Summarise the key themes you have covered in your paper.

Throughout your paper, make sure that you provide the evidence to support your argument. This means drawing upon and referencing the appropriate evidence from relevant module materials and your further research. To gain a good mark you need to demonstrate that you are accessing a range of high quality materials, and are using them as the evidence base for all of your points and observations.

You should use the APA (7th) style of referencing. The Business School’s Guide to Citing, Referencing and Avoiding Plagiarism is available on the UEBS Academic Development Resources ELE site (look for the link on the right hand side of this module’s ELE page). Your work should include reference to academic sources (such as books and journal articles) as well as a range of other sources (such as, for example, journalism, databases, blogs, industry literature and reports).

Where appropriate, you are strongly encouraged to make use of contemporary visual resources such as diagrams, images or infographics, as discussed in the seminar sessions.

We recommend that you use the Studiosity service to gain feedback on the language, structure, and referencing in your work prior to submission – you each have 10 uses of this service throughout the academic year, and can access it via any of the links in ELE.

  1. Create a 2 minute reflective video (20% of available marks)

Focus on how your experiences on this module have helped you to understand the subject and enhance your learning. You should comment specifically on:

  1. how online collaborative learning (via the MOOC, discussions on ELE and the real time seminars) has supported your engagement with the topics covered, drawing upon contributions you have made and responded to throughout the module. What exactly did these activities add to your initial understanding?
  2. how your own behaviour has changed over the course of the module. What aspects will you take forward for your personal and professional development?

You should structure your reflection around a proven reflective framework such as Gibbs Reflective Cycle or the 4Fs of Reflection – more information is provided in the “Assessment” section on ELE.

Videos can be created in your chosen format (e.g. live action, cartoon, voice over slides). There is no obligation for you to appear personally in your video, for example you may wish to explore some of the online tools we introduced you to in the MOOC such as Powtoon or Biteable. You definitely DO NOT need to hire a studio, purchase specialist software or premium versions of digital tools to create your video!

  1. Provide screen shots of your contributions to the module discussions on the MOOC and ELE (a minimum of one original comment and one response to a comment per week throughout the module).

Submitting your work

Submit your complete Portfolio (Paper, link to reflective video and screen shots) as a single pdf file via eBART.

Please do NOT try and upload the actual video file. You should include a clearly labelled link within your portfolio to where you have created/stored the video. This may be on OneDrive, YouTube, LinkedIn or other web-based location. It is your responsibility to make sure that the settings allow the marker to access and watch the video (for example as “unlisted” rather than “private” on YouTube)

Please note that all extensions and mitigation requests are dealt with by the Building One Hub team: info.buildingone@exeter.ac.uk. For further information, please see University Guidance here.
