HSM138 Evidenced Based Public Health Management

Question:

Your assessment will be assembled gradually during the progress of the module through a series of written tasks (patches), which you will share with each other in small groups. There are several reasons for this:-

  • to avoid the last-minute rush of having to write the whole assignment at the end of the teaching, when time is short;
  • to enable you to use a variety of different ways of writing, and thus to increase your opportunity to demonstrate your own particular abilities;
  • to enable you to give each other early constructive feedback as to how clearly you have presented your ideas and how they might perhaps be developed;
  • to enable you to write about all aspects of the module content (instead of having to select just a few aspects for a specific essay topic).

Tasks

A critical literature review in response to a published Public Health research paper. This is developed through completion of 4 patches, which break the task (the critical review) into smaller pieces, followed by a final synthesis of all four patches, the critical literature review. This literature review should demonstrate both a clear grasp of the material covered in the module and indicate wide and appropriate reading. You should therefore undertake relevant reading to inform each individual patch.

You are to choose a paper from a selection of four research papers provided below that interests you. Follow the guidelines provided for the individual patches (in no particular order) in the template below to develop your writing based on the issue addressed in the paper, you are expected to relate your writing to your own research on the topic.

Each of the four patches should be in length, time will be made available for you to discuss in small groups the writing you have done in response to each of the writing tasks (patches). This provides you with formative feedback to help you develop your knowledge and critical thinking along with your academic writing. Once you have discussed each patch you should reflect on what you have learned from the discussion, how your writing needs to change to reflect this development and make notes to inform your writing which will progress to the final synthesis stage.

The final part of your assessment is a synthesis of the four patches. This is designed to give you the opportunity to revisit, edit and revise the ideas you have presented in your earlier pieces and to discuss what you have gained from the work as a whole. (This is the only task that will need to be completed after the end of the teaching for submission to the dropbox).
