Reading: It is important to read widely for this assignment. Your reading should include both academic journal papers and other sources of information. This is appropriate for this assignment, as the global pandemic is an emerging and current issue, limiting the availability of journal papers about the impact of it. It usually takes a few years to get a journal paper published once research has been conducted. However, lean is not new so it is important to balance your work with some academic sources. When reading non-academic sources, do so with a critical eye- who has this been written for, why, is there a motive, can I trust it? These are all questions that you should be asking. It is also very important that you reference your work correctly using Harvard referencing. Not doing so will limit your mark.
Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Whilst you are encouraged to discuss assignments with staff and peers, the final write-up must be your own work. The essay must present your own analysis, understanding and conclusions rather than a copy of someone else’s.
Submission of Assignment: Your work must be submitted via the Submission folder on the Canvas site under the assessment folder. There is no hardcopy submission for this assignment.
Formative Feedback: You will be provided with the opportunity to have some formative feedback on your assignment during your tutorial sessions in Week 5 (28th October). The further along you are with your assignment at this point, the more feedback you will receive so please do not leave it until the final week!
Lateness Penalty: Five percentage points shall be deducted from the assessment mark for each working day after the due date up to a maximum of five working days; however, the mark will not be reduced below the pass mark for the assessment (40%). Work assessed at below 40% will not be penalised for late submission of up to five working days. Work received more than five working days after the submission deadline will receive a mark of zero.
Other Penalties
- 5% of total marks for every day late to a maximum of 5 days. After that a zero mark.
- Up to -5% of total marks for poor referencing. This is expected to be in the Harvard style.
- -3% of total marks for every 100 words over the word count.
- 5% of the overall mark available for the piece of work will be deducted if an essay is presented in a form that makes it difficult to read e.g. if not word-processed, in a font of less than 12 pts.
- I will not impose a penalty for the use of Wikipedia, but students should be aware that it is an inappropriate source for this level of studies and will be an indicator of the works quality.

Word Count: Your essay should be no more than 1500 words. This will require you to demonstrate the succinct (compact) writing skills that are required in writing executive summaries in industry. The word count does not include titles or references. The essay should have page numbers inserted. The fairly small word-count means that you should cut out all the waffle (waste) and deliver carefully crafted words (value). This is a skill you must learn for business as well as academia.
Critical Analysis: Develop a critical analysis of the concepts you are examining and do not simply describe the reading you are doing. You should read widely to become an ‘expert’ on this topic. Well-reasoned, informed opinions in your essay are encouraged.
