For this assignment, you are required to choose two schools of economic thought from those discussed and compare their respective theories. The theoretical comparison can be either between

  1. Perry Anderson (2000) describes neoliberalism as ‘the most successful ideology in world history’. Critically examine neoliberalism philosophy in the light of Covid –

We have discussed economic concepts/events and their relationship to/impact on economic activity. For this question, you are required to critically examine the concept of neoliberalism in times of economic crisis, such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Here are two suggestions for tacking the question, but you are not restricted to these:

  • You may select a theoretical framework, which can be a common perspective or variant of neoliberalism and explore to what extent its philosophy has been/is being deployed during the Covid-19

or

  • It can be a comparison of two different economies such as UK and USA or two different sectors such as higher education and public health services in the same economy, to examine the extent to which neoliberalism has been/is being implemented during the Covid-19

Your essay needs to feature appropriate academic literature and therefore, students are strongly encouraged to engage with primary sources and original works. However, textbook can be used for planning the selection of your research material. The essay needs to respect the standard formal requirements for academic literature (further information can be found on the library website). The style of referencing is Harvard author-date. Please refer to the library website for detailed information on referencing and bibliography. Your essay must be uploaded via Turnitin.
