You will be doing 2 activities that will help you think about Inequality. Then you will write an essay about Inequality. Follow the steps below to complete the activities.
1. complete exercise one- play the game at the following link play 3 to 4 times and note your outcomes and thoughts to use in your essay 1. Go to PLAYSPENT
2. Follow the steps to complete exercise 2 created by Dr E in the discussion labeled Assignment 2 activity 2. Make sure to upload your activity worksheet – failure to upload will result in a point deduction on your essay (see rubric)
After you complete the activities use the list of questions below to help you write an essay about how differences in social characteristics and social location impact life experiences.
What were your experiences while completing these exercises? Were there things in the exercises that surprised you? How did these exercises help you think differently about inequality?
Were there aspects of these exercises that you had previously considered to be all about personal choice and personal traits? How does these exercises help you think about those things as social structural constraints?
How does these exercises inform the conversation about class differences and poverty?
There are common assumptions that people who are poor are there because of their own poor choices or character traits- how do the events these exercises address this?
Although we think of poverty as a personal trouble (something we can fix with our personal work or by changing bad character traits) discuss the ways that poverty is actually a social issue (something that needs larger social structural change).
In the second exercise, What were the characteristics of the children that had the best outcomes? What were the characteristics of the children with the worst outcomes? What does this say about the importance of our ascribed characteristics? How does this relate to ideas of privilege? Take a look at the outcomes for your child would they have been different – using the exact same random numbers if your child had been a different race? What if they had been a different income or gender? What does this say about the importance social location?
In the second exercise, Take a look at the starting income for your child and for other children. How does this relate to adult outcomes? What does this say about the importance of the income status we have when we are children? What would be the impact of this child’s demographic characteristics if they were to have a child?
The second exercise started with 2 competing hypotheses- that 1) because all the children had similar traits they would have similar outcomes or 2) because of structural constraints they would have different outcomes. Which was most supported? Given that all children in the exercise were born with the same work ethic, resilience, intelligence etc. what explains the success of this child? How does that relate to patterns of success in society?
What theoretical perspective best works to analyze these experiences?
What potential solutions to inequality does this make you think about?
Paper should be 4-5 pages not including the title and reference page.
In addition to the exercises you should use citations from your class resources.
You should integrate information and cite at least 3 in class resources.
Additionally these resources might be helpful.
