Discussion 8

Reflect upon this course.  Utilize the core competencies for Nurse Practitioners and identify a plan for future growth.  Include an analysis of what you have learned and what you would like to learn in the next course.

Although finding a site was not very easy since most everyone would not accept students because of COVID, this course became one of my favorites during this program. At first, it was nerve-racking to even think about starting my clinical rotation and adhere to the role change from registered nurse to a provider as a nurse practitioner. I had the opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired to understand my role as a provider clearly. Nurse practitioners acquired the skills, aptitudes, and essential knowledge to efficiently provide care to patients as independent providers (Chapman et al., 2010). Besides the didactics part of the program, the mentoring experiences emphasized the analytic abilities for evaluating and providing EBP care (Cahill et al., 2014). Patients often doubt nurse practitioners in their role as providers. Therefore, having the preparedness, aptitudes, and authority to diagnose without the supervision of others, and most importantly, gain my client’s trust is what I am looking forward to in the future.

Hi Dawn,

It is great to know that you have enjoyed your eight weeks of clinical rotation and have found your niche in the NP role. I agree with you that the knowledge acquired during the rotations is astonishing. Clinical rotations are a vital aspect for aspiring NP to gain experience and advance their skills in the field. For instance, not all of us will have the opportunity to experience stitching surgical wounds. Having to learn and able to do that, in my opinion, was remarkable. Clinical rotation helps expand one’s techniques and knowledge to provide quality and safe patient care. Hence, an advanced nurse practitioners’ leadership will guide and treat patients efficiently by delivering care based upon the latest guidelines (Heinen et al., 2019). Also, I agree that knowing the billing code to bill the visit properly is essential to the practice.

I wish you success with the rest of the program and hope that your future goals come to fruition.

Hi Rita,

According to your post, you had a fantastic experience during clinical rotation. It is crucial to set up measurable goals prior to the clinical rotation, giving us a roadmap to follow and effectively evaluating ourselves. Besides having good communication with the preceptor and establishing the expectations, I think it is essential to an effective clinical outcome. As intimidating as the rotation may seem, it allows us to put into practice what we have learned all along and grow tremendously. One may feel unprepared to transition to the new role as an NP, but practice and preceptorship help ensure successful transition (Albarqouni et al., 2018). For instance, I, too, was intimidated by the idea of writing my patient’s SOAP. However, my fear was gone at the end of the rotation, and I acquired the skills needed to write the SOAP efficiently and independently. I hope that you will reach all of your goals during the rest of the program and wish you success.
