Abstract

The article titled Translation and Transfer: Interdisciplinary Writing and Communication examines the challenges that scholars face in writing and communicating effectively across disciplines. The article also looks at strategies, benefits, and challenges that scholars face in interdisciplinary communication.

The article explores the paradox of interdisciplinarity, which involves scholars explaining ideas in their discipline to people outside the field using their perspective. Interdisciplinary communication can occur horizontally where a researcher communicates to other researchers in other disciplines or vertically where scholars write to others of the same institution but of a different level (Comer, 2013). The article looks at writing within a specific discipline as dependent on individual scholar’s approaches and experiences to learning and writing, which influences whether the field moves forward or backward (Comer, 2013). Interdisciplinary communication is critical even as there are differences in approach and epistemology, both vertically and horizontally.

The article also explores the challenges of interdisciplinary communication such as a breakdown in communication between two disciplines due to failure in understanding. The authors give an example of where NASA engineers sent a memo to their managers on a technical issue; however, due to a breakdown in interdisciplinary communication, the management could not understand and appreciate the extent of the technical problem (Comer, 2013). With this example, the article concludes on the extent to which scholars in one discipline gain knowledge but are unable to appreciate knowledge from other disciplines. The authors also argue that researchers can be immersed into their disciplines that they cannot notice that writing is specific to their field.

In conclusion, faculties and researchers must identify ways to become better at interdisciplinary communication by looking into writing transfer and patterns that span multiple disciplines. This interdispline communication will help scholars understand their fields and make their areas more transparent.
