Title of Assignment
The short-animated film WindUp provides an enchanting perspective into a difficult story about the relationship between a parent and a child. The film is directed by Japanese filmmaker Yibing Jiang. The movie has been using Unity animation, which features allow the film to create realistic human figures (Wu, 2021). Since its official release on August 20, 2020, the film has earned critical acclaim for the thematic expression of a father who shows deep concern for his ailing child. The film’s ending is set against a contrast of happier moments and periods of despair (Smith, 2021). The film features exceptional animation clarity, which helps make the characters more identifiable as viewers can build a deep connection with the father who struggles during a dreadful time when his daughter is suffering in the hospital under a coma.
The film revolves around a girl and father – perhaps he is a single parent – that deeply cares for her well-being. In the opening scenes, the father and the child play a hide-and-seek, and as the child is looking for her father in a bedroom, the father starts to hum a melody that the child recognizes so as to help his daughter find him (Imdb, 2021). The scene cuts from a happier time to a more serious scenario where the child is bedridden in a hospital, perhaps in a high dependency unit. The girl is heavily bandaged with multiple IVs hooked to her nostrils; her father sits at her bedside. As the child rests in the hospital, the father plays the same tune shown earlier that he hummed while they played. The tune is from a wind-up musical box. The child, who seems to be in a comatose state, hears the tune in her unssciousnes and slowly responds to the tune. The film has been edited so that we see the dreamed unconscious world as she experiences it. In her comatose dream, she is alone and scared. Meanwhile, the father, back in the conscious world of reality, accidentally drops the music box and it breaks. The father is not able to repair it, so, the father hums the melody as he sobs. The film crosscuts once again to the child’s dream world; she hears her father humming the tune and she responding and wakes up and is greeted by her father.
