Identify the Fundamentals of a Criminal Investigation
The criminal investigation is a process forensics use to collect, seek and gather evidence for a case. Three methods of inquiry are used to gather the information for an investigation and include intuition, tenacity, and authority. A criminal investigation is established on gathering empirical, observable and measurable evidence. Investigators use this method by collecting statements, collecting evidence and going through the electronics database. They also utilize the five W’s, what, who, where, why and when the crime happened (Brandao, 2019). In summary, the investigator needs to employ the scientific method in each of the investigations they do.
The first step to reconstruct a case is by detecting a problem. By noticing a problem, we can find the question we need to answer. Secondly, an investigator needs to collect the data, including the three sources of physical information: evidence, people, and records. For example, in the case of assault, the investigator will fast interview the victim of the crime and look for any witnesses that could have seen the crime. Next, the investigator will have to collect any physical evidence in the crime, such as weapons or clothes. Forensics may also look for video records from the phone to see if the accused assaulter threatened the victim.
Reconstructing a crime scene involves conducting a sequence of events of what happened during and after a crime. The study and interpretation of scene patterns and physical evidence examination can be used to reconstruct a crime scene. Blood spatter interpretation, accident remonstration, trajectory and shooting reconstruction, and sexual assault reconstruction are examples of various reconstruction forms (Roux et al., 2018). Thus, the forensic needs to have a laboratory with numerous experts and consultants to help reconstruct a crime scene.
