Introduction
My chosen topic is The Civil Rights Movement. I chose the topic as it is one of the major protests that had the greatest impact in U.S, and particularly on African Americans. The movement involved a campaign for social justice where African Americans fought to abolish whites’ widespread discrimination and racism in the 1950s and 1960s (Kevern Verney, 2020). The various amendments (13th, 14th, and 15th) were finally awarded to African Americans after fighting for equal rights with their white counterparts. The movement gave African Americans access to rights and privileges that they had previously been denied. The movement was a source of inspiration and motivation that the people had to fight and reject all forms of unjust laws and practices subjected to minority groups.
Causes of the movement
The establishment of Jim Crow laws aimed to restore white supremacy that had waned since the end of the Civil War. The laws paved way for widespread racial segregation in the Southern states (Carney, 2009). Second, the civil rights reform agenda was being implemented slowly. That angered African Americans, who formed protest groups to pressure the NAACP to implement president Truman’s agenda for the black people. The civil rights movement sparked debate among political supporters, resulting in the significant adoption of civil rights laws in the 1960s.Prominent people such as Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, Diana Nash and Julian Bond were involved and played significant roles in the movement.
Conclusion
The Civil Rights Movement transformed prevalent racial grievances into an effective force for social reform with political leaders and civil rights advocates. The reforms stopped segregation in public areas, including restaurants, schools, and later offered African Americans rights to equal employment opportunities and the right to vote.
