Advertising and the effects on the American Diet
It has happened to all of us. Walking down the street, scrolling through the internet, driving, and watching tv, there is no escape from advertising. These ads are directed towards us like a sniper taking a point-blank shot into our deepest fears and desires. They analyze us, like hunters, and pounce at every given moment. So, does this onslaught of advertising have long term effects? We can see a cultural shift by focusing down on Americas favorite past time, no not baseball, Food. The American Diet has gone through several iterations. Through corporate propaganda and misinformed scientific results, the American diet seems to change every week. There are diet fads, obesity issues, and a melting pot of cultures that encapsulate what it is to eat American. This constant shift in our diets can be traced back to roughly the industrial revolution. As soon as food was able to be mass produced, it was up to the business owners to sell their product. It is possible for us to investigate advertising and see the effect it has had on our diets. Some food habits for the better, but we can dive deeper into poverty and see that those without the means, are being forced into a life of unhealthiness and culinary addictions.
