ICE 2, Article Critique Fall 2021

Once you have an article from a peer-reviewed journal, it is important to know how to extract the valuable information. This will be especially helpful when it’s time to properly summarize it in your Literature Review in the Introduction of your research paper. Each of the following questions will roughly correspond with each of the different sections of the article, (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion).

What are the variables in the study? How many IVs are there? What are they and what are their levels?

How many DVs are there? What are they?

(Where to find: Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results [graphs])

How were each of the variables (both IV and DV) operationally defined and measured?

(Where to find: Methods)

What was the hypothesis of the study?

(Where to find: end of Introduction)

Briefly describe the methods and procedures of the study.

(Where to find: Methods, Figure 1)

Describe the major findings of the study (mainly the ones that directly relate to the hypothesis). Was each of the hypotheses supported or not?

(Where to find: Results & Discussion)

State a potential confound and/or limitation of the study.

(Where to find: often in Discussion)

Did you learn anything surprising from the findings? What do you think you’ll remember/take home about these findings?
