ICE 1: Hypotheses, IV, DV, Operational Definitions
Objectives: Identify IVs and DVs, understand difference between alternative and null hypotheses, practice coming up with a specific operationalization of variables. Critique operational definitions on how well they measure the construct of interest, whether they are likely to be noisy and why.
Instructions: There are an infinite number of ways to define any variable/construct, but keep in mind that good operational definitions are necessary to ensure validity. Below there is a table with several variables. Please write a possible DV that could be an outcome of or be correlated with the IV provided. Please explain how you might measure (operationalize) the IV and DV with enough detail that another researcher could use this method in their own study. Then, come up with hypotheses of how the IV might relate to the DV. Write one scientific hypothesis and one null hypothesis you could test.
