Personal Philosophy
My personal values are different before joining the course, because whenever I talk to people with disabilities; I usually prefer “disable person” instead of person with disabilities. Furthermore, most of the time I avoided them instead of inclusion because I have a fear that person with disability are harmful and dangerous. I believe that, they were “not self-independent”, ‘Childlike”, and always put more burden on a family due to “lack of self-employment”. In short, I think that they were “Punished by God”. My attitudes regard person with disability was negative; I felt that people with disabilities were aggressive in nature, I did not prefer to participate with them in any activity. Whenever I met with adults with disabilities, I speak that adults as they were child.
After studying this course, my values, beliefs and attitudes are changed. I learnt about “person first language” is important to maintain dignity and respect of rights of person with disability. People with disability need real friendship, must be able to enjoy mobility and accessibility which allows them actively to participate in community life. Overall, my perception and attitudes were changed, when I know that person with disabilities must be able to employment as well as freedom to choices and decision regarding independence. I treat the adult with disabilities as an adult and avoid “childish behavior’.
During completing each module course, I did lot of activities, stories, news and discussions which highly impact on my values, believes and attitudes regards person with disability. For example, sterilization of Leilani Muir, badly abused by family as well by institution. A heart touching story creates empathetic feelings regards person with disability. I realize that every person has right to enjoy each stage of life, but Leilani Muir second marriage was spoiled due to illegal sterilization. I believe that informed consent is necessary either “person have disabilities or not”, treat everyone as an individual, always respect the rights of the person, focus on capabilities rather than disabilities.
There are some positive things which remains unchanged after this course that; person with disabilities must be assured continuity in their lives through families and neighborhood connections. For example; in learning journal 1, I am in a favor of Betty and Joe have a right to take independent decision regards their sexual life. Such kind of rights helpful to maintain equity as other person and feeling to get involved in their life decisions. On the opposite site, there are some negative believes which are still unchanged that person with disabilities have never control on their behavior, such kind of complex behavior restrict me to make a good relationship with them.
Relationships are important for all of us, relationships are our number one reason for happiness. Person with disability build a good community in different places such as work, school. Church, through other friends and through a club or interest. I noticed that, critical boundary depicts that huge difference in two areas “Community Living” and “The System or Agency”. The people with disabilities are independently decide what they want in their life but in a system, there are some rules, funding streams and decision etc. affects and shapes the individual life. The changes are made how they get services from agency. Furthermore, SRV helpful to build a positive attitude of the person with disability within a community. There are some activities helpful to build a community such as sharing a meals. Meals are not about having perfect moments but about sharing life together having a place and time where people care about each other. https://nbacl.nb.ca/module-pages/inclusive-education-and-its-benefits/

Inclusion practices defined as people involved or participate in each activity regardless of their abilities, disabilities as well as health care needs. For example: participate in recreational activities in neighborhood settings, attend a general education classes with peers from peer school. Community inclusion in important for developing the sense of belongingness and better prepared the life of the child and adult within a community. Furthermore, it provide opportunity for learning, because children with varying abilities are often better motivated when they learn in classes surrounded by other children. Inclusive classroom helpful to develop an individual strength and gifts and manage the expectations of the child with disabilities regards their life. It promotes the family and community involvement in the life of the person with disabilities. Inclusive classroom provides opportunities to develop friendships with one another, friendships provides role models and opportunities for growth (New Brunswick association for community living, n.d, para 1, 2, 3, 4).
My values, believes and attitude highly impact on my profession because I believe that always respect the rights of the person with disabilities and serve with humanity. In this profession, it will helpful for maintaining a positive relationship with person with disabilities. My positive values and believes will instruct me to maintain relationship with person with disability and also influence my learning that how to deal with various kind of exceptionalities. On other side sometime my negative attitude, values will restrict me to make some boundaries. But after joining this course my negative values highly changed into positive way. I learnt that respect each person regardless their abilities and disabilities. Furthermore, I goes through various news, stories, films which instruct me that did our job with full dedication and give more importance to inclusion instead of segregation. Social role valorization is a best thing which instruct us “how to build community” and ‘how to promote the inclusion” of the people with disabilities. At last I would like to say that I will try to implement all my learning stuff, strategies in my practicum and develop skills professionally.
