Astronomy 106 Project Final Submission Guidelines:

Required:

Your final project.

If an essay: 4 – 7 pages (not including diagrams) in .pdf or MS Word format

If a video: 5 – 15 minute presentation

Unlikely that you will be able to post the video as a file, but if you can, please use a standard video format that can be opened on a windows machine (please consider checking on campus computers).

A link to a video hosting site such as Youtube, vimeo, etc.

A link to a public cloud drive that I can access such as dropbox, google drive, etc.

Please note that if I cannot access your project, I cannot grade it.

If a powerpoint with audio: You should be able to upload the file to eLearn. If you cannot, please submit a link to the file hosted on a cloud drive that I can access such as dropbox, google drive, etc.

Please note that if I cannot access your project, I cannot grade it.

Other formats: If your project is something that cannot be uploaded online, you will need to find some way for me to access it. Please make sure you have discussed this with me at the time of submitting your Project Outline on Nov. 6th.

Your name and student ID number

References/Citations: Even if your project is not an essay, you will need to include references or citations. You can either embed this in your project somewhere (at the end of a powerpoint, in the comments on a video sharing service, etc.)

You should already have these as they were part of your Project Outline submission.

Make sure you also include references for every image you are presenting that you did not create/photograph yourself.

Assessment Guidelines:

I am assessing your work on the following:

Adherence to the requirements

Submitted on time

Submitted in proper formats

Included all required components

Submitted Topic choice and outline on time (Oct 1st and Nov 6th respectively)

Content

At appropriate level

Your work should be slightly above the level that it would be presented in a first year course. This is because you have had 3 months to learn about a single topic of your choice.

Scientific content

You are not required to produce new scientific information, but you will need to present/explain scientific information.

Correctness / Science Accuracy.

The information you present must be factual and correct.

You are welcome and encouraged to include your own thoughts and speculations on the topic, but they need to be scientifically informed.

Authenticity

Your work must be your own.

This means that you will need to include citations/references for information/ideas that are not your own.

This means that what you submit must be created by you.

Your work will be checked for plagiarism.

Readability/legibility/presentation quality

This is not as important as the other points above, but your work must be presentable at a university level.

Make sure you run spellcheck software, and potentially a grammar check software

If you are submitting an essay, consider going to the Writing Centre and having someone check your work.

Most importantly, your writing/language/etc needs to be clear enough that the scientific content is accurate.

Things you are NOT being assessed on:

Writing style, English writing ability.

This may feel like a contrary statement to the points above, however, I want to assure you that I care about the scientific content being accurate.

If you are worried about your ability to write/communicate, my best advice is to aim to be clear and simple, and this will help making sure the information is accurate.
