Exam 5 Case Study
1. Where do you think your sport (whatever your favorite sport to watch or play) is going in the United States, and what financial or strategic challenges do you foresee?
My favorite sport is Football (soccer). Football has been exponentially growing for the last decades in America and it is positioning itself amongst the classical American Sports. However Football has a unique characteristic that should be taken into account and this is that all sports in America are basically only or majorly important in America meaning that their market is domestic while they do not have foreign competition. In football, the MLS does not only compete with the other American sport leagues but they also compete with the rest of the FIFA competitions around the world, and especially with the Mexican league. In the end a league is popular if it provides the consumer an entertaining espectacle. In my modest opinion only the best players of the sport can actually bring that excitement and that feeling of competing at the highest level. So MLS has to fight for these players who have the opportunity to play all over the world and therefore this is why I believe that football has a bigger challenge in that sense. Hence, MLS has to compete for players with organizations worldwide making it hard to bring the biggest stars into the league because there is a limited amount of superstar players and there are many leagues and competitions. So, the main challenge MLS will face is to bring top quality entertainment to America. Otherwise it is impossible for them to succeed in the long run.
2. What do you think will be the next big international break-out sport or entertainment trend, and how can a company or team take advantage of those potential opportunities?
I believe that the next big international breakout entertainment trend will be E sports. New technologies have made gaming affordable almost worldwide and in the future this technology will be even more affordable. Therefore if we have more kids playing video games we will have more grown individuals interested in gaming and therefore in gaming competitions. An increase in the audience will cause an increase in demand that business people will and are already detecting and will increase the supply of this. One clear example of this is that colleges are already creating esports teams and giving scholarships to members of the team. More and more colleges are starting to create these teams and competition at college level can also explode in the following years generating numerous prospects that will then try to be professional. The increase in people participating will naturally increase the level of the gameplay as more people will lead to more competition forcing pros to improve their skills making a better spectacle that will attract even more people. This is already a billion dollar industry and consumer tastes especially amongst the young have started to switch from traditional physical sports to electronic sports, meaning the future is bright for these types of competitions.
3. If you had to make the game of baseball more attractive for viewers and fans, what would you do and what do you think will be the impact?
Baseball historically has been one of the flagship sports in America, however in the present day it seems that this well established sport has been losing traction gradually over the American public. From my personal foreigner point of view, baseball has never been attractive for me and the majority of the people outside of the United States and Caribbean islands because it lacks action and games are too long with a lot of interruptions. Therefore I believe one of the main changes that should be implemented to make the game more attractive is to speed up the game. Everyone agrees that baseball games are too long so these are some examples that will make the game more interesting; Enforce the pitch clock, this would solve two problems. It takes pitchers out of these silly routines that create eons between pitches, and it would force hitters to stay in the batter’s box. Adding on, allow teams to signal an intentional walk. Create a way for a catcher or pitcher to signal to the home plate umpire that they are issuing an intentional walk and do it with one pitch. Also, the baseball season is extremely long, there are just too many uninteresting and unimportant games so it would be a good idea to shorten the regular season, expand the playoffs and tighten the playoff schedule. Have three division winners and three wild card teams, with the top two records in each league getting first-round byes and the first-round matchups being best-of-three series. Shortening the regular season by two weeks would allow us to have the extra round and still finish the season in October. Finally I believe that baseball in the current day is a sport that lacks superstars, therefore I feel that to get the traction back the league needs idols. So MLB and its franchises should aggressively market individual stars. An increasing number of stars are of Hispanic or Latin-American descent and have no interest in learning English to the point that it would make them more marketable to the general American public.
4. What current trend in the sport or entertainment area do you think will fall into disfavor with the consumer population? What supports your argument, and what would you do to possibly reverse that downward trend?
The current trend of airing sports on television will fall into disfavor with the consumer population. In today’s fast paced environment, nobody likes to spend time on long commercials which are aired during the break. As these commercials eat most of the viewing time, the consumers are moving away from televisions and finding alternate sources of entertainment on the internet. Gradually the TRP (Television Rating Point) is declining year on year and thus airing sports or sitcoms is in serious danger. The solution to this problem is to keep a balance between the commercials that are aired in the breaks to bring back viewers interest in watching television. Also steps should be taken to bring down the cost of subscription to channels to make them compete with OTT Platforms like Netflix etc. Moreover good content shall be developed for television to attract viewers attention and prevent the death of television.
