Acting: Taxi Driver
Response 1
‘Taxi Driver’ is Martin Scorsese’s feature about an ex-marine from Vietnam turned a taxi driver in New York (Scorsese). There is a general feel that Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro, was one actor that was well cast for his role. He is the protagonist in the film playing the role of a taxi driver in New York. For a young actor, as De Niro was then, he perfectly fits the role of a troubled ex-marine who is struggling to fit in society. He proves a versatility that many only envy when starting their acting careers. Contrary, it is almost distasteful to watch a very young teenager play Iris, a prostitute played by Judie Foster. It would have probably been better to cast an older teenager, maybe closer to the adult age.
The cinematography of the film is quite okay, considering the time in which it was shot. The camerawork delivers an excellent experience for the viewers, as well as the sound production that does justice to all the characters and the portrayal of their actions. Overall facial features and voice qualities of all actors resonate with the exact scenes that they play in. In the case of an unconvincing performance, it was because of the associated miscasting that went into the film, especially in the part of Judie Foster playing Iris. Besides that, the performance was a good fit.
Response 2
On the contrary, I would disagree that Iris was wrongly cast. It is a casting that many would dispute at first, but eventually, she owns the role and gives it her best. As a viewer, her role comes out almost naturally and well-adjusted as the film progresses. She is eventually saved from her pimp, which goes as any audience would expect for her character to play out. A character that I would consider not wisely cast is Betsy, played by Cybill Shepherd. As the story develops in the film, there is a certain feeling that there is external pressure in her character, like that of causing messes as the film was being shot, probably being notorious in her scenes. It seems like a character that would frustrate the production team.
Similarly, I would agree that the whole production of the film is okay. If one were to watch the film today, there wouldn’t be so much difference in how the audio and video play out compared to contemporary films. The overall performance is befitting a great review for the characters as they complement each other whether they seem wrongly cast or not. The general feel of the movie is that of a job well done.

After watching the clip from Taxi Driver I can agree that Robert De Niro being casted for the part of Travis Bickle was a great option. He plays the part very well and I can’t think of anyone else who would play it better than him. When he was talking to himself but portraying talking to someone else, it makes the audience wonder if he actually is talking to himself or if someone is silently there. This performance was very convincing and delivered well. The physical appearance of his character was very raged and unkept and it fit the personality of his character very well. He was very unwell as a person on the inside and his outsides show the same thing. The voice quality was very calm and stern when needed. They portrayed him as a sick person talking to air or talking to himself, but really the character might’ve thought he was actually speaking to someone or thinking someone was actually there. He seemed very sick as a person and didn’t know how to fully take care of himself or his things. This is what I mean when I say he is “ un well and unkept “. Imagine walking down the street and seeing a sick person wandering by themselves talking to themselves and having a full blown conversation. This said person may think they are actually getting a response or actually having a conversation with another person due to the way their head portrays things. This is exactly what we see in Robert De Niro’s character Travis Bickle in the Taki Driver movie.

The film that I chose to comment about the acting of individuals in a movie is Star Wars: Attack of the Clones but also the prequel trilogy as a whole. The acting in the prequel trilogy of Star Wars overall is amazing and well thought out by the actors and the directors of the film. On the other hand, there were some instances where I felt the acting of some individuals wasn’t the best at times in these films. An example of acting being a slight problem is the scene where Anakin and Padme which is played by Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman and are on Naboo because Anakin was sent to protect Padme while she was hiding. Their feelings for each other escalated due to them being together for so long together on the Naboo. This scene really emphasizes how both the actors were either not prepared for this part or simply not cast wisely into these parts. The reason is that Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman made this entire scene more awkward than it needed to be to fill their part. I feel this way because Anakin is supposed to be this confident and arrogant kid that has trouble dealing with certain situations but this scene just didn’t sit right in my stomach when I watched this. Natalie I feel was more suited for her role than Hayden Christensen due to her fulfilling the role as a senator of Naboo and less a girl falling for Anakin. Natalie’s physical characteristics match what you would think Padme would look like as a person and how she dresses. In addition, the facial features and voice qualities of Natalie really helped portray her as Padme. On the other hand, Hayden Christensen’s physical characteristics and facial features are suited for Anakin but his voice doesn’t seem right to fit his character. Overall, I do believe that Hayden is a competent actor and just delivered a slightly incompetent performance.
