STI Research Paper You may choose the STI from the table below

STI Research Paper

You may choose the STI from the table below to research and write a paper about. You will present the topic as a research scientist; as if you were the person that was doing research on the particular subject. Assume the class knows absolutely nothing about your topic.

Sexually Transmitted Infection

Chlamydia

Gonorrhea

Hepatitis

Genital herpes

HIV/AIDS

Human papilloma virus (HPV)

Syphilis

Trichomoniasis

Pubic lice

In the body of your four-page paper (the title, reference page, and graphics/images are not counted in this four page minimum), you will address, at minimum, the questions in the table below (you may answer other questions you may come across in your research). Be creative and write this as if you were on the lecture circuit sharing research information with a college audience. Use appropriate language (no slang, do not write like you talk or text). Note the length of the paper is small (only four pages – not including title page, references page, and graphics/pictures). Therefore, you will be writing a fact-packed paper. This is not an opinion paper.

STI

What are current statistics regarding this STI?

What is the cause (bacterial/viral)?

How is it spread (what are the ways it is transmitted from person to person)?

What are the symptoms?

Are there any complications?

How is it diagnosed?

How is it treated?

You will use at least five different references** (Wikipedia is not an acceptable source); three articles from the CCBC database and two internet sources (.edu and .gov only, do not use .com or .org unless approved by me). Use APA format to cite your references in the body of the paper and in the reference page at the end of your paper. Sources cannot be older than five years. This is science – current references are mandatory.

**While you can use your text book for background information, it will not count toward the six references. You are to find these for yourself (that is what research is all about).

If you are not sure about correct in-text citations for references use the following web site.

http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ or use the CCBC Writing and Literacy Center, available online at https://www.ccbcmd.edu/Resources-for-Students/Tutoring-and-Academic-Coaching/Writing-Center-and-Online-Writing-Lab.aspx. You can also click on the ‘Information Literacy’ hot link under the course content heading for help with your paper.

Note regarding plagiarism, citations, and quotes:

Do not cut and paste from web sites (it’s easy to tell when you do it). This is plagiarism and results in failure of the course, not just a zero on the paper.

Cite factual material in your paper (author, year). There should be a citation in most paragraphs.

If you feel you must quote from a source, do so sparingly. You should be paraphrasing the data in your words, not someone else’s using their words only. If you use a quote for a whole paragraph, that is plagiarism whether you cite them or not.

Submit your paper with a title page (four full pages .doc/.docx or .rtf attachment, no .pdf) in the assignment area. You may also post the final paper in a discussion board for extra credit.

Note: This is an assignment in which all students will be sharing their information in the discussion board (maybe) yet still writing an original paper. Do not copy from someone’s post. I will catch it.

What this paper is not: it is not a list of bullet points. It is a college level paper written in paragraph form. Turning in a few pages of bullet points will result in a failing grade.

Late papers will not be accepted for any reason.

If you have any questions about this paper just contact me in Blackboard messages.
