COSCI 418 FINAL EXAM: Discussion Board-Based Questions

1. CHAPTER 7: p. 197, Q. 21: entrapment; p. 197, Q. 23: biometrics; p. 198, Q. 24: piracy

RE: The Ethics of Ransomware by Dan WrightTop of Form

I believe an example of ransomware, would be the dark web. There are many illegal purchases that can be made. These purchases are used to benefit cybercrime such as child pornography, illegal purchase of weapons, etc. There’s a demand for these types of things so there will always be the development of new software’s, websites, etc. Unless these websites are tearing down and the people participating in this get caught.

RE: Is Biometrics the new best level of security?Top of Form

Apple uses biometrics for their customers to assure the best privacy. That is better than password locks. Fingerprinting facial pattern and voice or typing cadence, assures greater accuracy for identification. I believe that biometrics is the best security which is developing day by day

2. CHAPTER 8: p. 232, Q. 23: free software; p. 232, Q. 24: open source; Q. 25: proprietary issues

RE: IP in NFT contexts— by Ryan Ziegler

Top of FormI agree, NFT sre units of data stored on a blockchain digital ledger. These tokens are good because they show a certification of authenticity. This is good for artists because their work cannot be stolen and protects the rights of upcoming solo artists. You can also make money from NFT’s.

RE: IP Infringement on Social Media — by Jordan WhittingtonTop of Form

IP infringement is using someone’s property without the consent of the owner of that intellectual property. You can prevent intellectual property theft, identify the most valuable data, review user access to IP, find cybersecurity gaps and weak spots, establish a data security policy, monitor employee activity.Bottom of Form

3. CHAPTER 9: p. 259, Q. 1: digital rights management (DRM); p. 260, Q.4: sexting

RE: Net Neutrality: Was a Repeal the Best Decision? — by Blair ThomasTop of Form

Net Neutrality is good, because it’s a fair game for everyone involved, we see a diverse number of things on our devices not subjected to one thing. I know North Korea is one suffering with this because the people living there are under the control of the government of what they can see on their devices and have no Net Neutrality. Therefore, When Utilitarianism standpoint was mentioned, I see why the greater good of the population was seen when it came down to passing laws in favor of net neutrality. But now a lot of big companies are not in support of this due to loss of profits. So, what is more important and what will be ignored? is human freedom on the net worth sacrificing for some profit?

RE: Net Neutrality & Free SpeechTop of Form

Net neutrality is beneficial for us, it levels the playing field, meaning no one with more money receives special treatment. It also has a lot to do with freedom of expression. ISPs can block content or slow down webpages just because they don’t like them, but with net neutrality that is prevented. Also, ISP is something you must pay to use, compared to Net Neutrality has no additional charges for content.

RE: Censorship of Free Speech on Social MediaTop of Form

Censorship is important when there is bad language being used, but most social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram (mostly Instagram) I have noticed sensors people or makes their account temporarily inactive or deleted them when an important topic is being spoken about. During the BLM movement many activists had their account deleted, banned, or censored from the public. Now it’s one thing to sensor when there is foul language being used and or something inappropriate is used on the web, but it was totally a violation of human rights when people were speaking their mind about what was happening on a national level. Bottom of FormBottom of Form

4.CHAPTER 10: p. 288, Q. 22: digital divides; p. 288. Q. 24: international issues

RE: Internet inequality and how to fix it.Top of Form

I’m happy to know that the digital divide has helped bring aware to the situation of students not having internet access or technology. But I wish big companies did not look at money to do good for the people in need. Instead, I believe there should be laws and regulations to provide high speed internet in rural areas or areas that need it the most.

RE: Covid 19 Digital Divide by Nick CheripkoTop of Form

The digital divide in shorter world is accessibility one has to the internet, for example a rural third world country vs. a modern country with a lot of technological advances. We had the luxury of online schooling, where even computers were provided to us. But back home in my country (Pakistan) my cousins had to pause their education because technology is not so freely available and is very costly.  Bottom of Form

RE: Digital Divide and Covid-19Top of Form

After reading this it made me realize the luxury, I have access to a computer at home, have reliable internet, and a stable connection, the same cannot be said for other people. Therefore, I believe internet should be deemed essential for all students. The school systems should provide more resources and assist in internet for their students to succeed. If schools must go back to online learning, they should be able to provide technology and internet for a lower cost or even free internet plans to their student. I do believe the government can do much better for students.

5. CHAPTER 11: p. 313, Q. 21: online communities; p. 313, Q. 22: virtual reality (VR), Q. 24: AI

RE: Online Deception and Friendships

Top of Form

Online friendships can be great and bad, there is a risk when becoming friends with a stranger, like are they really who they say they are. But sometimes it can be great to meet new people. Teenagers spend more time on phones rather than other human interactions. But I do think there is something lacking when you become friends with a stranger compared to someone you meet in a classroom. For example, I would feel more comfortable connecting with someone in person, than having a 50/50 shot at connecting with someone on social media and still not knowing who they really are.

RE: Effects of Online Communities by Rene Walcott-Taylor=

Top of Form

Social media platforms are good in bringing everyone together, but there is a dark side to it as well. There is a lot of cyber bullying, mis information, etc, that can be passed. An example were people saying that microchips were in the covid vaccines, and a good amount of people were refusing to take the vaccination because of it. Social media is very powerful in the sense that it can take power away from an influencer in seconds and give power to one.
