Topic Selection.
The industry selected for this discussion is Apple. The chosen topic for my post is the challenge imposed by the American government to Apple on encryption.
Description of Apple
Apple is a multinational technology company specializing in customer computer software, electronics and online services. However, Apple is the most valuable company globally for its production of popular gadgets such as iPhones and iPads. The market shares for Apple’s services and products are very highly competitive, and the company is affected by the aggressive competition from competitors (Aljafari, 2017). The overall market share for the company has raised the most outstanding percent over the current years. The primary competitors of apple include computer manufacturers and smartphones manufacturers. Some of the manufacturers include the HP company, Toshiba, International Business Machines Corporation and Acer. Apple is facing competition based on operating systems as some of its competitors have aggressively lowered their prices to maintain or gain market share.
Opportunities and Threats
Apple has various significant opportunities, such as expanding the distribution network to reach out to a wide customer electronics market. Some of these opportunities include increasing the sales volume via aggressive marketing. The expansion of the network distribution will assist Apple in reaching more customers on the global market (Aljafari, 2017). Additionally, Apple has the opportunity to create new product lines such as online services to complement the existing ones. Therefore, developing new products will create support to the business growth to fit in the competitive market. Apple company is experiencing some threats from its competitors, such as Samsung. Generally, threats are referred to external factors that limit the financial performance of company business. One of the threats is the imitation of the companies that compete based on low prices. Furthermore, aggressive competition from multinational companies like Amazon is another threat to Apple. Apple faces a threat from other technology companies, which also use rapid innovation to maintain and gain their market share.
Government Action
Additionally, to secure devices to protect users from hacking and surveillance, the American government challenges Apple’s encryption. The American government asked Apple to unlock two encrypted iPhones belonging to the shooters at the naval base. The government recognized the attack as an act of terrorism, and accessing the shooter’s devices would protect American citizens (Hack, 2017). The government requested Apple to weaken the encryption to keep the secure digital lives of Americans. However, the government’s request will have an impact on the operation of Apple. For instance, device encryption protects the essential information of the users such as finances, family and political views. However, weakening the encryption will affect the security of Apple’s users. Law enforcement by the government to weaken encryption might lower the market access of Apple company. In conclusion, if the government request for weakening encryption will violate the privacy of Apple’s users and their human rights.
