“ I am interested in joining medical school. I have always wanted to be a medical doctor and later specialize in pediatrics. My career line is directed by the need to alleviate suffering on children going through various illnesses since they are vulnerable populations that need utmost care from caregivers. My interest in pediatrics was aroused during my high school years when I understood the immense suffering that children in Yemen were facing as the country experienced a civil war. I am a first-generation Black Muslim student from Yemen, and over the years, I have been keeping tabs on the happenings in Yemen. I usually watch news describing the desperate situation of civilians in the country and cannot help but wonder the extent of trauma the children are experiencing. I would like to be a ray of hope to such children and others battling different diseases worldwide. “
The online Master of Public Health (MPH) program from UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health is designed for and by people who are dedicated to solving the world’s most urgent public health challenges.
The Statement of Purpose is your opportunity to show us you’re one of those people.
As you write your essay, keep the following ideas in mind as you address these four questions:
Question 1: Why are you interested in pursuing a Master of Public Health degree and how will this prepare you for your career?
Connect your academic, professional, and personal experiences. Tell us how your background aligns with your desire to earn an MPH and make a difference in the public health space.
I am planning to attend medical school after receiving my master’s in public health. (Add anything that grabs their attention)
Share your career ambitions. Where do you see yourself going with an MPH? What are the hard and soft skills you possess that will get you there? Why is UNC’s Gillings School the right fit for these goals?
I am planning to pursue a career in pediatrics. I am not ready to go to medical school after graduating with my bachelor’s degree because I don’t think I am ready. With COVID, I experienced few things, but I would like to explore more and see other pathways that might help me improve my background and knowledge. (For this question you can say whatever you think is best for me, I just provided few information about myself)
Question 2: How have your previous work and volunteer experiences led you to apply to the MPH?
I have shadowed and volunteered with few places and organization. Some are listed in my resume.
Show us that you’ve done your homework. You should feel comfortable talking about the program, concentration(s), career paths and outcomes, as well as the academic expectations that come with being a graduate student in a top-ranked program.
Emphasize the concentration(s) of your choosing. Be clear on which concentration you want to pursue and why. Do the same for your second and third choices, if you have them. How does your background support the path(s) you’ve selected?
My first concentration is leadership in practice and my second one is nutrition. (For this again, you could say what’s best for me, the reason for picking them is because I am ready to take the role as a leader. For nutrition is because since I am planning to become a pediatrician I need some great background.
Question 3: Racism has been identified as a public health crisis by the American Public Health Association. How do you plan to be actively antiracist and use your public health training to interrupt systems of oppression, discrimination and abuse that exist where you study, live and work?
Share your awareness of these topics as well as your thoughts and feelings. Give examples of times you’ve experienced or observed oppression and discrimination. Discuss how these examples relate to public health and how you plan to fight against racism moving forward.
This from my undergrad college essay application:
The best decision my parents made for my future was moving to the US. After moving to the United States, my first years in the country were not so appealing. The signiRcant obstacles I encountered in the initial years in America were cultural and language differences. I had come from Yemen and the differences in culture and language in America really challenged me. I was not used to this kind of culture that embodies diversity and inclusivity. I felt depressed at some moment because I did not have friends to play with or any interest to participate in. Because of language and cultural differences, I did not participate in any activities. My Rrst day of school in the new country was the worst in my life. As I walked into the classroom, everyone stared at me in bewilderment and I could hear others whispering behind me about the way I looked.
As days passed, some kids came up to me and asked me if I was from Iraq, Afghanistan, or an Arab with the southern accent. This was the most helpless time in my life because I could not find anyone to talk with or share my free time with. I later noticed that these stereotypes would continue and there is nothing I could do about it. I decided to start making friends but most of them ignored me at some points and told me to go back to my country. I felt irritated because I was not able to comprehend how kids, who are perceived as innocent, could say such words. My enthusiasm and passion for school slowly started to fade.
Hopefully this helps. You can change anything you want, as long it sounds good and realistic.
Question 4: Please explain why you are interested in applying to your first-choice and second-choice concentrations (if applicable).
Discuss your passions. Tell us why the concentration(s) of your choice fits with your goals in pursuing a master’s degree in public health. How will the specific concentration(s) help you achieve your aspirations?
Please note: These prompts may differ depending on the term you’ve selected. Be sure to review and answer the specific questions listed on your application.
And don’t forget:
Your essay should not exceed 1,500 words and should be no less than 1,000 words.
Show your passion and enthusiasm for the public health field!
Tell us about you, not us. We already know about our rankings, legacy and athletics. Why is UNC’s Gillings School the right place for you and your public health ambitions?
Your Statement of Purpose should be written in a professional manner and clearly demonstrate your ability to write at a graduate level.
