Module 2 Assignment on American Nation, American Empire
The Assignment for Module 2 includes a source analysis chart to fill out, and then a short-answer question. Each answer will be worth 5 points. For the first question, fill out the chart included – use complete sentences to answer the questions within the chart. For the second part, answer the question in 2 paragraphs. Base your answer on the information presented in the American Nation, American Empire Sway Lesson. Do not use outside sources. Be sure to use specific examples included in our lesson (including the assigned readings and videos). Answer the questions in your own words.
Question 1- Source Analysis:
The Native American sitting on the other side of the room
Does it symbolize a group or groups within the United States or who lived outside of the United States?
Describe the image – what do you see?
Historical Context: What is the United States policy and/or events that help explain the meaning of the image? Base your answer on the lesson.
Meaning: Why did Dalrymple include that image in his cartoon? Were the people being symbolized citizens? Did they have the right to vote?
Dalrymple’s School Begins is commenting on the U.S. claim that its imperialism was “spreading democracy.” Dalrymple did not think the U.S. claim was sincere. The classroom in School Begins is not about teaching math, science, or English. It is about who is included in self-rule – who is part of the democracy. Dalrymple used the images in his cartoon to question the sincerity of the U.S.’s rhetoric that it was “spreading democracy.” As you analyze the images within the cartoon consider what each image is saying about democracy. Complete the source analysis chart below by analyzing the image of the Native American siting on the other side of the room.
Question 2 – Connect:
Base your answer to this question on the two assigned readings within the lesson – the interview with a Yale Professor and the blog on Hawaiian Food. Answer should be at least one paragraph in length (6-8 sentences).
In your own words, summarize Professor Freedman’s conclusion about how to define American cuisine. Does Hawaiian cuisine, as discussed in the PBS article, go along with his definition of American cuisine? Explain your answer.
