Macromolecule Murder Mystery

Part 1: Go to this PearDeck and complete it prior to starting the mystery. The last slide of the PearDeck has a video that will be used to complete this mystery. Keep the video open on a tab to complete tonight’s lab exercise.

Part 2: The Murder Mystery (use the video on the last slide of the PearDeck)  Macromolecule Murder Mystery Google Slides

Background: A body was found on the strand early Sunday morning. The victim is believed to be 20 year old Steve Shoemaker. His mother, Mrs. Shoemaker, reported her son missing late Saturday evening. An autopsy was performed on the victim that revealed what the victim ate prior to his time of death. Three suspects have also been apprehended in connection with the murder: Sanda Shadytree, his boss from work; Johnny Didit, the victim’s roommate; and Janelle Darkside, girlfriend of the victim. To help identify who the potential murderer is, your goal is to analyze stomach samples from Steve and try to determine with whom he spent his last meal. The murderer is believed to have shared Steve’s final meal.

The Suspects:

Sandra Shadytree, who admitted to hanging out with friends at Fat Baby’s Pizza. Steve loved the thick crust pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon. Which macromolecules would you expect to find in Steve’s sample if he ate here?

Johnny Didit, who revealed that he ate at The Smokehouse with friends while watching the Dodger game. Steve’s could not resist their honey glazed barbecue wings. Which macromolecules would you expect to find in Steve’s sample if he ate here?

Janelle Darkside said she was at Frankie Bones restaurant that night with her parents. Steve would always order the garlic bread with olive oil and buttered pasta with a big 7-Up. Which macromolecules would you expect to find in Steve’s sample if he ate here?

Prelab/Background Research:

Before analyzing the stomach contents of the deceased Steve, you must determine the procedure to be used to test for each organic molecule. Since there was no receipt from the restaurant found on the body, and the food was too digested to identify, you will need to characterize it by identifying the macromolecules.

1. How will you figure out which macromolecules were in Steve’s last meal?

For each macromolecule you must:

describe or draw the procedure in enough detail that others could repeat your work

describe how a positive result for the macromolecule will look and record in Table 1, and

describe how a negative result for the presence of the macromolecule will look and record this information in Table 1.

2. Why is a control very important in tests such as these?

Experiment:

You will use the information from above to help eliminate suspects. Write a scientific, testable question to drive your investigation.

Question: (Think: will this type of testing be better for eliminating suspects or accusing suspects?)

Hypothesis:

Data: Test the stomach contents of the victim. The victim’s table has been created for you.

Now, it’s time to make a CLAIM, show the EVIDENCE, and provide REASONING for this analysis to solve the murder.
