This assessment is made up of 2 Parts:

Part 1: 2,500-word essay (worth 70%) – this is an essay. Discuss how the preceptor/ mentor would develop learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support the student to achieve a successful outcome. Utilize /refer to the module content, the learning opportunities and resources in the practice area and further reading, to develop your discussion.

Part 2: 1,000-word reflective essay (worth 30%) reflective style essay. Discuss how the learning gained would apply to your practice as a preceptor/mentor.

Structure your essay using the student guidance below. This will make it easy for your reader/marker to follow and understand. The suggested order of content is a suggestion and not prescriptive.

1. Introduction:

Outlines effectively and clearly what will be discussed in the assignment, including an outline of the content. Consider the context of preceptorship/ mentorship in nursing. Please use your own practice area where the student is placed for the purpose of this essay.

(350 words) 10%

Outline what you are going to discuss in the assignment.

Briefly discuss the importance of preceptorship/ mentorship in clinical practice and the consequences of failing to fail a student. It is expected that this would be supported by references from the literature.

2.Main Body:

Discuss the role of the preceptor/mentor, identifying key qualities of being an effective preceptor/ mentor

Identify learning style/s and their application to learning, teaching and assessment of your student

Discuss application of learning theories for example: andragogy/pedagogy, cognitive and behavioural

Analyse the importance of the clinical learning environment

Assessment to promote learning in practice.

(1800 words approx.) 50%

Discuss the Importance of orientation/induction to the wider team and clinical area, consider how these relationships can support or obstruct learning.

Explore the literature related to the role of mentor in clinical practice and the unique relationship with their mentee.

The role of self-awareness and emotional intelligence – knowing yourself and others.

Discuss the range of learning styles and the ways in which learning styles can be identified. Ascertain why learning styles are key to learning, teaching and assessment and give examples of how learning styles can be used to help students learn.

Determine how knowledge and application of learning theories can enhance student learning. Demonstrate how a mentor would apply each theory to enhance student learning.

Explore the literature to consider how the clinical environment impacts on the student learning experience

Consider objective setting during the initial interview using a SMART approach.

This section should emphasise the value of accurate record keeping and recording progress. Explore the function of an Action plan to develop student learning.

Evaluate the process of providing timely feedback, focusing on the significance of the mid (formative) and final (summative) assessment.

Discuss the importance of two-way feedback (student and mentor).

3. Conclusion

This section should summarise the main aspects of your essay. There should be no

new points being made or references here.

The conclusion should summarise all the key learning points from the main body. You should not merely list the key learning points but discuss how application of the key points can support students to achieve their set objectives.

Part 2 Reflective Essay

1000 words

1st person writing

Write a personal reflection on how learning from this module has developed your thinking and development in relation to the role of preceptor/mentor.

Apply the 3 Headings of Borton’s Model

Refer to the SWOT analysis of your own clinical learning environment (from Learning Outcome 2)

Be creative and reflect insightfully.

References not required for this part.

(1000 words) 30%

This is a separate piece of writing to the above essay.

Use Borton’s (1970) reflective model headings to guide the writing of your reflective essay – (3 Headings: What, So What, Now what).

This section is to be written in 1st person

Use the SWOT analysis to inform your reflection on learning (Include your SWOT as an appendix)

Provide recommendations for your future practice as a mentor/preceptor

5. References

Accurate APA 7th system referencing in accordance with University guidance.

Use APA 7th citation. There is guidance in the Assessment section on Moodle

Remember to ensure all references in the text and written in full on the list.
