Teaching Philosophy Statement

I believe in the uniqueness of individuals, and education needs to reflect individual identity. Therefore, I will incorporate various types of student’s intelligence through diverse activities related to academic subjects to increase their interest and intrinsic motivation. Including activities that reflect Gardner’s theory, students will have an equal chance to understand the subject through their talent.

Learning is an individual process through individual constructivism ( Ormrod &Jones, 2018). For this reason, I want to provide a student to teach class occasionally. It gives the chance to share their way of approaching the subject and the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding. I also want to provide various options for the group project. One of the vital functions of the school is to learn socialization. Therefore, I like the student to utilize classroom experience to learn intrapersonal skills and achieve an educational process with classmates.

A teacher’s role is to guide students to set the goal and help students meet the goal by providing the knowledge, feedback, and extrinsic reinforcer. I am aware of the importance of my role in academic accomplishment in students. But, fundamentally, what I want to offer to the student is the mentorship to find the drive in their life. For the mentorship, I want to be the teacher to approach any issues that hinder their growth. Carl Rogers’s unconditional positive regard explains my ideal approach to students. Students strive to understand themselves and behave to benefit themselves and others when they provide caring and support( Ormrod &Jones, 2018). Through regular counseling and an open-door policy, I will continuously communicate with my students and their parents to create weekly and monthly goals and provide feedback on their performance and growth.

In my humanistic approach to students, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a crucial assessment tool for their wellbeing. I am not just a knowledge deliverer. Students are not yet adults, and they are vulnerable. I am their protector and advocate. I need to assess the student’s environment through frequent interaction with parents to see if their basic needs meet the standard. Based on the hierarchy of needs, I need to provide a learning environment where students feel a sense of belonging. In that aspect, I need to teach empathy that plants the seed of acceptance for others. Every morning, in my daughter’s catholic pre-k, the teacher gave each kid a hug saying ” I love you” after finishing the Montessori activity. Then they prayed together to start the class. It was an everyday ritual. After one and a half years later, she grew up so much and became a confident kid with a solid academic drive. Therefore, I want to share a similar experience with my students. I believe a loving, calm, and inclusive environment without discrimination teaches kids empathy. And, it is the environment that kids need to build their self-esteem to step forward for self-actualization. As a teacher, I need to create that environment.
