Public Health Topic Assignment 4: Health determinants
A deeper dive in the factors that influence health status
Select a topic from one of these sources (this is optional, just giving you some sources):

Use the Socio ecological framework to examine the factors in relation to the health topic you are investigating.
The objective of this assignment is to conduct an analysis of a topic, using the levels of the SEM, and identification of determinants that impact health that are non-medical. The point is to use the SEM to organize the health determinants, and become familiar enough to do this with other topics.
Writing the paper
Pick your topic. Read background information (chapters in encyclopedias).
Use the subheads, then put each of the points that you want to make in the subheads. Then, list the specific concepts/ideas per each point. That will give you a strong outline. Then, write to the outline, add in sentences and paragraphs. The outline in our public health writing is critical. Strong outlines makes stronger writing.
This paper should be about three pages long at minimum, not counting title page and references. Use APA formatting. There should be five sources – academic, formal sources.
For example for the topics of “nutrition and healthy weight,” health conditions for poor nutrition and [over] weight would include obesity, Iron-deficiency anemia, heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and more. In this assignment, you would use these heads and subheads:
Introduction/background – Description of the health condition. Your writing should cover the name of the condition, what happens when people have it, early-mid-late trajectory of the disease. Screening for it (if there is screening or identification tests).
Burden or impact – Short description of the population and the prevalence, incidence, or other measure of burden.
The Social Ecological Model (SEM) – what is the SEM, short paragraph describing it.
Individual – what factor influences the vulnerability of the population at the individual level, short description
Interpersonal – what factor influences the vulnerability of the population at the individual level, short description, short description
Institutional or organizational what factor influences the vulnerability of the population at the institutional level, short description
Community – what factor influences the vulnerability of the population at the community level, short description
Structural or policy – what factor influences the vulnerability of the population at the policy level, short description
Summary – How these different factors produce the impact on the population.
