SPS 240 Final Project Requirements
As noted in the syllabus, your final project is worth 25% of your final grade. There are three things that you will submit for your final project:
Your Excel dataset
Your final report
Your presentation
For your Excel dataset:
You will submit your final Excel dataset on Blackboard
Before submitting your dataset, double-check to make sure that all of your data/variables are there. In other words, make sure that the file you submit is the correct, final version.
Things that will be considered when grading your Excel dataset: Did you collect the appropriate data? Was it compiled in the correct manner? Did you get the numbers correct?
The link to submit your dataset will be in Module 15
You must submit your dataset by 11:59pm MT on Wednesday, August 11
For your report:
In your final report, you must:
Describe the data (where you got it, what each variable represents, etc.)
Include multiple data visualizations, and explain why you chose to visualize the data in the way you did
Discuss what you found in the data (i.e., what associations/relationships did you find?)
For example, let’s say that you collected data on exposure to pollutants across a state’s counties. You could discuss whether exposure to pollutants is higher in urban or rural areas, areas with higher or lower percentages of different racial groups, or in places with higher or lower incomes. This is just an example; what you actually do will depend on your counties/ countries and measures.
There is no minimum page requirement
Reports will vary in length depending on how many extra variables you included in your data collection, how many data visualizations you include, and the amount of detail you provide when discussing your findings.
You should provide as much detail as possible in the written portion of your report
Things that will be considered when grading your final report: Did you make appropriate visualizations and justify why you chose those visualizations? Did you make a good interpretation of the trends that you found in your data? Did you accurately describe and relay information without drawing inappropriate conclusions? Did you provide an adequate amount of detail when discussing these things?
The link to submit your report will be in Module 15
You must submit your report by 11:59pm MT on Wednesday, August 11
For your presentation:
You will create a PowerPoint presentation and record a video (via Zoom) of yourself presenting it
The presentation must be between 3-5 minutes
This equates to roughly 5-8 slides
You will need to practice the presentation before recording it to make sure you are within the 3-5 minute requirement
You should include at least three data visualizations in your presentation
You will not be able to cover every single detail of your report in the presentation
Instead, your presentation should cover only the most important/significant findings from your data report
I would focus on the extra measure(s) that you chose. You will want to show how this measure varies across your counties or countries. For example, you could show how the measure varies across counties that voted for Trump vs. Clinton, urban vs. rural, etc.
When you record the presentation, you will share your screen so that we can see your PowerPoint as you discuss it (similar to many of the videos you watched this semester where I shared my screen and you could hear my voice as I discussed the PowerPoint)
If you have questions about how to record your presentation, please let me know and I’d be happy to share more information on this. You may also use Boise State’s OIT Help Desk for more guidance.
You will upload your presentation the “Final Presentation” discussion board
You must upload your presentation by 11:59pm on Saturday, August 14
