Do Cultural Universals Exist?
A cross-cultural comparison research project
Description: Choose any aspect of human life or anthropological/cultural theme and evaluate whether or not you believe it to be a cultural universal based on ethnographic evidence. Refer to the eHRAF articles that we have read in class. However, endeavor to choose an original subject to focus on. If you choose to explore one of the subjects from the weekly syllabus or aspects of it, you must use predominantly new examples and a new angle, supplemented with the original theoretical and ethnographic research. Any of the listed resources in your syllabus are acceptable, but you are welcome to go beyond these texts by visiting other journals and resources you have evaluated.
Instructions: While you are free to write about something that you have experienced in your own culture, use the eHRAF database to decide on your topic or trait via the cultural summaries, and conduct research across several cultures, to ensure that you will be able to gather enough ethnographic data for comparison. “Paper” topics and proposed titles must be emailed to Professor Menz for final approval at least three weeks before the deadline.

Research Guidelines: Aim for 3-5 Ethnographic Examples/Cultures from various parts of the world. You may choose any cultures that interest you as long as they are not all in the same world regions i.e., South-Easr Asia, Europe and so on. As long as you meet the minimum content requirements, you may include additional materials. Please make sure to conclude your project with reflections on cross-cultural differences and similarities.
Writing Guidelines:
References: All sources must be correctly referenced with in-text citations and lists in a bibliography. Refer to the colleges guidelines on citatations, plagiarism, and academic content.
Multimedia: You may supplement or choose a multimedia project including creating your own videos, presentations, photos, or digital artwork.
Length: Any submitted paper must be 8-10 double spaced pages. If you are supplementing a paper with a multimedia project please accompany said project with 4 pages of typed research. If you are submitting a fully multimedia project please also submit a bibliography and citations in writing i.e., video citations note the time in the video when used. Your bibliography is additional to the page count. If you choose a multimedia project, please email Professor Menz ASAP so we can discuss length and requirements.
Presentations: You will be required to give a 5-7 minutes presentation on your work the week of December 6th.
