Case study 2: The Flawed Emergency Response to the 1992 Los Angeles Riots
In this case, defective systematic procedures lead to a series of events where African Americans constantly experience racial segregation throughout the city. The events start with a video of LAPD officers striking 56 baton blows at Rodney King. Rose (2020) states that societies have been victims of unlawful and racial discrimination for many years leading to damages that not only affects the victims, but community as well.
Research plan: I will utilize peer-reviewed articles and journals, and textbooks that critically dissect and present this analysis for my research. The research will consider the specific materials such as budgetary restraints, culture and leadership, and other possible complications that might hinder an organization’s ability to address the issue. I will then conduct an analysis on leadership skills and strategies used in this case determine the best practices and course of action. I will then recommend leadership styles that will most likely solve this problem.
Main issues: The critical leadership issues, in this case, include culture and diversity training, execution of a leadership strategy or a development plan, lack of crisis management, and healthy communication. While the theme of racial segregation is evident all over the city, this raises questions on how it was considered a tolerable practice for law administration officers to mistreat and oppress people of color.
Leadership analysis: Until recently, the department of leadership never addressed the events the led to L.A riots. According to Song (2020), a riot plan was never used; instead, the former police Chief Daryl F. Gates used a generalized training guide. Daryl’s approach depicts the poor leadership skills and quality of public service to eradicate prejudices.
