Write an essay that analyzes the relationship between religion and violence in TWO of the
following contexts:
(1) territorial expansion;
(2) maintaining order within a society and/or ensuring the survival of a society; and
(3) the persecution, oppression, or enslavement of minorities, subject peoples, or “others”.
Explore TWO different civilizations or cultural encounters for each context (FOUR altogether).
You must use examples from both weeks 1-5 (ancient histories) and weeks 6-12 (medieval
and early modern histories).
Tips and technical requirements
• A good essay will include specific examples from lectures and readings and, like your
comparative essay, will be analytical rather than simply descriptive. This is your chance
to show that you can bring together material from across the course and demonstrate
understanding of the content. Essays should draw on materials from lectures AND
tutorial readings. It is not enough to make an argument; you need to support it with
some evidence or examples taken from materials covered in the class. However, you
should not quote sources at length. You are not allowed to use materials not used in
the course.
• You want to make sure you discuss the differences between the cases you use for each
context as well as the similarities so that you don’t inadvertently imply that different
civilizations are the same.
• Your essay should be double-spaced and written in Calibri or Times New Roman font
size 12.
• Your essay should be about 1,200 words (4 pages). Please include the total number of
words at the end of your essay.
• The evaluation of your essay will be based on:
o The relative clarity and cogency of your argument
o The extent to which the essay demonstrates understanding of the material in the
lectures and readings
o Your use of evidence and examples from lectures and readings to support your
arguments.
• For citations, include footnotes but you only need the short version of the citations. For
example:
o Lectures:
§ 2. Meyerson, “The Rise of the Japanese Samurai,”
o Textbook:
§ Wiesner-Hanks et al, 137.
o If you are using an electronic version that is not easy to find the page number, you
can cite the section:
§ 3. Wiesner-Hanks et al, “Chapter 6: The Coming of Christianity “.
o For tutorial readings you can just include the name of the source and page number
