D1: Implementing Strategy

As we have been learning over the term, the goal of a situational analysis is to understand the current situation through a systematic analysis of the external and internal environments, as well as careful consideration of the organization’s directional strategies – mission, vision, values, and strategic goals. Once we have the strategy identified, we move into the implementation phase. You learned in your text that there are “seven deadly sins” of strategy implementation. Thinking about these “sins” will increase your understanding of the challenges when our original plan is not working. Contingency plans can then put into action if the strategic assumptions change quickly or dramatically, or if organizational performance is lagging.

Consider the following scenario: Assume that you are working on a strategic management team in a recently merged suburban health care system with multiple facilities including a hospital, nursing home, and outpatient clinic services. You have developed action plans including demonstration projects based on the current provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and other current (and often-competing) demands on the healthcare environment. A major part of your planning has entailed developing and implementing an Accountable Care Organization. The next imperative is to update the emergency preparedness plan. The current plans vary by organizations within the system and are an average of 15 years old. Communities in your catchment area have recently faced wildfires, a related mudslide, and a small earthquake. With these recent natural disasters, your leadership team feels a sense of urgency to modernize your plan, in addition to a comprehensive plan. In addition to a comprehensive strategic plan, your team is also working on emergency preparedness action plans for each department.

In your opinion based on what you have learned so far in this course, share questions you might to ask to gain needed information? How would you conduct your strategic thinking analysis?

Now applying what you have learned from the readings, let’s go through the rest of the discussion together, one question at a time.

Given the scope of this strategic planning, what potential barriers do you envision to implementing your strategy? How do you recommend overcoming these barriers? Please substantiate your recommendation(s).

In today’s pressured healthcare environment, how deeply should management go in planning for contingencies? Given your charge, in what kinds of situations might you need to develop contingency plans? Please share examples.
