Lab write up: Urinalysis

Fish Tank Aquarium Glass Float Hydrometer w/ Thermometer Salt Water Marine 20 cm

(This is the hydrometer that I am using for this lab)

(1) What kind of hydrometer did you use?

(2) When you measured the specific gravity of the three glasses of water with your hydrometer, what did you observe? Tell us the numbers you recorded. From your hydrometer readings, which is more dense — salt water or pure water?

Include a photograph of your hydrometer in use to earn full credit for this lab exercise, (counts for 10 points).

What values did you see for specific gravity when you measured the three different glasses with the test strips?

(3) Report on the color, transparency, and specific gravity (measured by hydrometer) of the urine sample.

(4) After measuring with a hydrometer and determining specific gravity, would you say the urine sample was more similar to pure water or the salty water?

(5) Share an experience with prescription drugs and urine color, vitamins and urine color, or foods and urine color. Do tell us the story, but don’t tell us the source of the story unless you have their permission. (The stories can be from anyone, not just the person who gave you the urine sample.)

(6) What are some causes of turbidity that may be observed in urinalysis? Give at least three causes. (Read the lab manual.)

(7) What were your results using the urinalysis strip? Tell us the name and brand of your urinalysis strip. Report on pH, glucose, protein, ketones, bilirubin, hemoglobin and any other characteristics on the strip.

Don’t tell us the source of the urine unless you have your test subject’s permission to tell us.

Include your photograph of the test result (next to the standard) to get full points; this photo is worth 10 points.

(8) How did the numbers for specific gravity compare when you used a hydrometer and when you used a strip that reports specific gravity? Did you get the same value or near to the same value?

(9) If you were to examine the urine sample after centrifuging and using a microscope, what might you observe? Give a few examples of what you might observe. (Look at the figures in the procedure written in your lab manual.)

(10) Why is it important to refrigerate a urine sample if an analysis cannot be performed immediately after collecting the urine?

Try out an additional experiment to see if there is a change in the urinalysis results using the test strip. Here are some suggestions, but you may come up with an experiment of your own. Do not have your subject eat or drink anything that the subject would not normally consume, and don’t have your subject do anything that might be a problem if they have a medical condition.

Have your subject eat a small bag of salty chips, and then examine their urine sample after 1 hour.

— or —

Have your subject eat something that is very sour and acidic, such as a few sour pickles, or have them drink a kombucha beverage. Test their urine an hour afterthey have had the acidic treat.

— or —

Have your subject drink a glass of water or two, and then test their urine an hour or two later. If they were well hydrated before the earlier test, then you may not see a difference in this result.

(11) Write a hypothesis of what will happen to the urinalysis results of your test subject when they eat or drink the item.

(12) Report on color and transparency of the urine sample. Report on pH, glucose, protein, ketones, bilirubin, hemoglobin and any other characteristics on the strip. Take note of the specific gravity.

(13) Were any of these characteristics affected by the item that your subject ate or drank?
