Nursing 5300 Theory Integration has reminded me how important nursing theory is and that as clinicians we apply it more frequently in our health care practice than we think. It has been very insightful and reading the many theorists has helped to reminded me nursing is more than just executing doctor’s orders and that we are truly our patient’s advocate. It is no wonder that, when pressed, nurses cannot describe the impact they make with patients and their families–coaching and comfort food for the soul interventions are rarely valued by administrators and are often not visible in patient care records. This can result in the value of nursing being understated or even invisible (Smith & Parker, 2020, p. 375). Nurses play such a vital role in treatment outcome for their patients. Doctors will place in orders such as give this medication or perform blood work. However, it’s the nursing care, that will help patients to achieve their milestones for patients to get well and or discharged home. This class has reminded me that technical interventions is needed to get well but the holistic care is just as important. It has also reminded me the importance of nursing and the compassion, care, and intergerity we give to our patients. The assignments that I had to submit will help to build a foundation in my career as a future nurse practioner.

Looking back over this semester, I feel I have learned a lot on Theory Integration, in a short amount of time. I am excited to see what next semester will bring, but nervous at the same time. We have gained knowledge in many areas, from the patterns of knowing, the metaparadigm, Emancipatory knowledge, Empiric theory, to middle range theories.
Overall, what has stuck with me the most is middle range theories. I have learned how beneficial they can be to the medical field. By fully embracing middle range theories, we are able to provide care in a more systematic, consistent, and holistic way. I have become partial to Betty Neuman’s System Model. “The philosophic base of the Neuman System Model encompasses holism, a wellness orientation, client perception and motivation, and a dynamic systems perspective of energy and variable interaction with the environment to mitigate possible harm from internal and external stressors, while caregivers and clients form a partnership relationship to negotiate desired outcome goals for optimal health retention, restoration, and maintenance.” (Smith & Parker, 2020, P.166)
I will utilize Middle Range theories, specifically, Betty Neuman’s System Model in my practice. I like how it can be simplified, and adapted to encompass, not only the patient, but also everything and everyone in their lives that can cause them stress. By utilizing the model, I am able to pinpoint areas of interest, and create nursing diagnoses. I am also able to create plans of care, based off the patient’s needs and then develop shorten and long term patient goals.
In many ways, I feel that theory Integration has helped me learn more about myself. “It is through knowing one’s self in a nonobjectified way that people are able to know the other. Full awareness of the self in the moment and in the context of interaction makes possible meaningful, shared human experience. “(Chin & Kramer, 2018 P. 8)
