Advising a Polarizing Leader Martin Luther King Jr. and Governor George Wallace

Advising a Polarizing Leader

Martin Luther King Jr. and Governor George Wallace were prominent leaders during the civil rights era in the United States. On opposing sides of the issue, both men held steadfastly in their beliefs and positions on civil rights. For this writing assignment, you will attempt to understand the issue from both men’s perspectives.

First, imagine you are serving as an advisor to Dr. King during the civil rights era, and your job is to provide recommendations to help him be seen as a strong and just leader. Now imagine you are an advisor to Governor Wallace and provide him with the same sort recommendations. (Note: Your personal politics are not on display in this assignment; your goal is to highlight the best attributes of each man as they address the public they wish to lead.)

For both Dr. King and Governor Wallace, include the following components:

Create a list of recommendations as to how each leader can best convey their ideas on leadership, morality, and ethics in public appearances, press releases, and materials released to the public (such as flyers and signs). Provide your rationale for each recommendation.

Describe each leader’s ethical principles and motivations for seeking a leadership position. How can the leader best gain public support in opposition to the other leader?

Determine whether a non-violent approach would be viable for each leader to propose.

Justify your decision.

Compare the two leaders directly, describing the attributes that give the leader an advantage over the other. (Cite specific examples that incorporate historical and contemporary leadership theories.)

Each leaders’ recommendations should be two to three pages, which will result in a four- to six-page paper (not counting the title and references pages).
