History Paper – Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952)
Please Note:
1) Your answers must be based on course materials (lecture, assigned readings, and films). Please do not use outside sources.
2) The best essays will integrate materials from lecture, and the readings.

General Instructions
1) Your essays should be double-spaced, in a 10 or 12-point font with 1 margins.
2) Correct grammar and spelling are expected. Multiple mistakes will be penalized. Do not assume that computer checks will catch all mistakes.
3) A sentence is a single thought. A paragraph is a unified group of thoughts. Avoid one-sentence paragraphs.
4) Make sure that you make an argument (provide a thesis) and that your essay has an introduction, a main body of text, and a conclusion.
5) Support your general points with specific evidence/ examples.
6) Quotations: The right quotation can add clarity and color to an essay. Too many (or too lengthy) quotations just bog it down. If you are not sure if you should use a quote, then do not use it. Use your own words instead.
7) Citations and Plagiarism: All direct quotes must be placed in quotation marks and cited. Failure to do so is plagiarism. All unique information taken from a source should be cited (when you use a specific example from the readings or films, include a citation). Cite your sources parenthetically (Authors last name, p.); (title).
8) You do not need to provide a bibliography or works cited page.
9) When writing a formal paper such as this avoid using first person, (I think, I have learned, I feel etc.).
American/ Allied Occupation of Japan (1945-1952):
Discuss the major goals of the Occupation of Japan and the key policies / reforms implemented during each phase of the Occupation. In your discussion of the various reforms, make sure to include goals, policies, results, and change over time. Did the Japanese people support the Occupation reforms? What were the long-term results of the Occupation?
*Make sure to write an integrated essay, not a series of answers to each of the questions.
