Re: Topic 1 DQ 1

A system of ritual practices, systemic beliefs, or social organizations is called religion (Hemeyer, 2016). People find significance in their lives by believing in a higher power, religious reasons, and even the sacred (Hemeyer, 2016). They are communities of people bound together by their shared commitment to a shared vision and shared experiences (Hemeyer, 2016). The part of the definition I find helpful is that people can find meaning in life and experiences. Because if there is no purpose, then people tend not to have ambition or goals. At least finding some meaning helps people navigate through life regardless of their beliefs.

My opinion or addition is regardless of religion, beliefs, organization, structure, or spirituality. It all helps develop purpose. These practices help people become a part of a group outside of their families and expose them to differences that are much needed in society. For the most part, all of these religions or practices mean well and are just trying to provide people with a way to cope and deal with life.

Tamika, Thanks for your contribution. You write that “I think the social-scientific perspective is the right perspective that we need to use for the materials of this course because it is possible to quantify various parts of religion and understand the questions that might be related to that particular religion.”

From your perspective, do you think religion is such a sacred topic that only the faithful, believers, or adherents should be the only ones to study it since they have first-hand knowledge?
