How to Organize a persuasive paper
(Exordium) Start the essay by introducing the topic, you may use a brief narrative to catch your audience’s attention. (See the sample essays)
(narration)State the main points of the topic or talk about the background or history of the topic. This is where you begin to establish your ethos by showing you know something about the topic.
(Partition) This part should contain a thesis that details your argument. Make your argument: Problem-solution, Imperative (this should be done), or a Classical Argument that can simply make an arguable point about a topic. For example “Candy is dangerous and this is why . . .” “The best choice of career is an astronaut.” “Aliens are real and this is why you should believe in them” You may use a three-part thesis, but it is not required. These first three parts may be one or three paragraphs.
(Continuation) These body paragraph(s) should be a description of the topic and this is where you begin to give evidence to support your ideas. Use quotations to support your ideas. If you have facts or figures, this is the place to use them. Discuss and explain the quotations. Remember, all of this information is here to prove why you are right. This is mainly logos, but you can also effectively apply ethos and pathos. (See Letter from Birmingham Jail) This should be at least three paragraphs
(Confutation) The counterargument. Show the other side of the issue. Why would people disagree with you? Take this time to refute or cut down the other argument to show why it is wrong. One or two paragraphs.
(Pronation) Conclusion, or concluding remarks. Think about this as the final speech to the jury in a. courtroom. You want to drive your point home and convince the audience that you are right. Restate your main ideas and remind the audience why the opposition is wrong. This is also a good place to use a very convincing quotation to support your final thoughts. Many writers also effectively use pathos toward the close of their writing. One paragraph
