Designing a gantry crane for heavy mechanical/ structural testing lab in CADET-X
The Design report shall contain all relevant calculations, sketches, figures, tables etc. to clearly articulate the design process and the final design outcomes in a meaningful way.
Description of the assessment task
As described in ‘Project description and specifications’, Deakin University is considering to build a new building CADET-X to support engineering students with state-of-the-art facilities. One of key facilities within this building will be a gantry crane that can be used to move heavy machinery as well as heavy structural components for testing. The preliminary/initial design of the gantry crane was analysed in Assignment 3 (note that not necessarily you need to complete/submit Assignment 3 to start working on Assignment 4, just assume the considerations taken in the preliminary design are also valid here). You now must work on the final design. The final design brings detailed specifications for manufacturing and construction work to be performed. You must address the changes discussed in the intensive week and below in your final design solution. You are encouraged to discuss the design process in groups but you must conduct the design process individually.
Each student shall submit an individual design report with all necessary calculations, design justifications, drawings etc.
Overall design process
You shall demonstrate appropriate use of your knowledge on materials and mechanics of materials to design key structural elements of the gantry crane for CADET-X building.
Every student shall have to design the following major structural elements:
- Rope(s) to lift heavy components for testing
- Major beam(s) spanning between end-supports (columns or walls); and cross-beam(s), if your design includes such provision
- End support structures i.e. columns supporting the major beams
Students shall work in specified teams and shall constantly interact and share their knowledge on materials engineering with other team members.
