Discussion: Tangible Versus Intangible Conflict Issues

In this Discussion, you are asked to identify a conflict situation about which you feel strongly. It may be a workplace conflict or a personal conflict at home or at school. The conflict may be interpersonal or between two different groups, but not more. Some examples of workplace conflicts might be whether you or a colleague will lead a project team when you were simply told to work together, or a clash over roles and responsibilities that have some overlap. Work conflicts may be over pay disparities, opportunities to be more visible, or unfair performance reviews, to name a few. Make sure that the conflict is about a content issue, not based on personality differences.

Documenting the details through writing them down and analyzing the conflict situation you identified will provide you an opportunity to put into practice the Stop – Think, Listen and Communicate (S-TLC) espoused in the textbook readings this week. As you plan what you want to communicate, keep in mind the basic communication rights and practice them with others, even as you would like for them to be practiced with you. Look also for the emotional content of the others involved in your conflict and identify opportunities to empathize with them. When people feel heard and understood, they are much more likely to be open to exploring options. These tactics create a safe space for learning, exploration, and change.

Assignment:

Post a cohesive response based on your analysis of the Learning Resources and your professional experience. Be sure to discuss the following:

Describe the conflict scenario you identified based on your preparation for this discussion, identifying the players, the core issue and the goal of the conflict—instrumental, relational, identity, or process, from each perspective. Select a conflict in which you have engaged or in which you intend to engage. (Note – you should not disclose names of individuals in a manner that would make their identities known to your classmates).

Specify which of the core conflict issues you identified are tangible and which are intangible.

See Tangible and Intangible chart

Using The conflict resolution toolbox Learning Resource, apply the Dynamics of Trust model to the perspectives of both parties.

Using the charts associated with each model below, select the appropriate model to describe your conflict and fill out the attached chart.

If you have already engaged in the conflict, use the functional cycle or dysfunctional cycle based on Figure 2.1 or Figure 2.2 within the Managing Conflict Through Communication text to describe your conflict

See The Competitive Conflict Escalation Cycle Chart

See The Passive–Aggressive Communication Cycle Chart

If you are still in the planning stage of conflict, use the Six-Step Confrontation Process within the Managing Conflict Through Communication text to describe your conflict

See The Six-Step Confrontation Process Chart – http://www.free-management-ebooks.com/news/six-step-problem-solving-model/
