Module 1 Discussion 1: Close Reading and Brainstorming

Close reading is a skill that will help you effectively mine your resources for the information you need. Learning to read closely and take careful notes will make your research process smoother and more organized.

In this discussion, you will offer a close reading of a source and use that reading to pre-write in preparation for your research synthesis essay.

You should spend approximately 2 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

The CCCOnline Library provides access to scholarly research databases. You can also access these databases from a link provided on your D2L home page.

Once you are on the research databases page, scroll down to find the Global Issues in Context database. Select this database. Then select “Database login.” Log in with your S#.

In the search box at the top of the page, enter “American Dream.” Then click on “Viewpoints (774).” Limit your search further by clicking on “Subjects” toward the bottom of the right column and, then, click on “American Dream (31)”. This will give you a database of 31 articles from which you should choose your article to read for this Discussion.

Think: Closely read and annotate the article. (Hint: You can use the Highlights and Notes tool on the right side of the reading panel to annotate online.) What information seems most significant? Why? What is the author’s main idea? What is the author’s purpose? What details are important? Do any words or phrases stand out? Why? What do you still want to know? What questions do you have as you read?

Write: In your discussion response, write a short summary (5-7 sentences) of the most important points of information in the article. Then, write a short response (5-7 sentences) to the article, discussing the significance of those main points. Remember that a summary should be comprised of only your own words. Create a Works Cited entry, formatted in MLA Style, for the article you chose. Conclude your post with any questions you have about searching the databases or choosing articles.

Post one original post, and reply to at least two of your classmates. In your peer replies, you can respond to your peer’s discussion of their article, asking questions or giving feedback about the significance of the article to your current research project. You can respond to peer research questions or give research tips, if you have them. Try to further the discussion in your replies by asking thoughtful questions, adding interesting information, or connecting your reply to the material we are discussing.

Don’t forget that your initial posting is due by the date listed in the Course Schedule. Please post over several days. Points will be lost if you post on only one day of the module.

Everybody has different views of the American Dream. Denene Millner argues that Americans do not treat African Americans equally, and that the American Dream should be recreated into a more achievable model for African Americans. Millner being an African American mother had hopes her children would have a better life than she did, but came to realization on how slim her kids’ chances were. She realizes that no matter how hard she pushes herself and her family, along with continuing to give her kids everything they want and/or need they still need to “play by Americas rules” due to the color of their skin. She worries her children will not get the same opportunities due to continuous racism that African Americans continue to live with.

This articles main point is that racism has a big impact on African Americans futures/lives. Millner states, “The explanation was obvious: racism, and the continuous price African-Americans pay for it, from generation to generation.” This phrase stood out to me because it seems as if todays society has adjusted to the way racism impacts African American lives. Millner is basically saying that African Americans have to work harder, than a white American and that’s why the American Dream should be rewritten into a model that is more equal. African Americans shouldn’t have to walk on eggshells because they are playing “Americas rules.”

Is the American dream dead? The question is that EM Powers Hunter is trying to figure out. In the article, EM wrote about how the people in Washington looked down on the family for not being rich, wearing expensive clothing, or the children don’t go to an expensive private school. With the economy changing, it’s getting harder and harder for the less fortunate to buy new clothes and feed their children. The National Gallery of Art changed a mom’s thoughts about how the American dream died. The paintings reminded the mom about how the American dream never died. The American dream was still living, and the mom was losing track of what the American dream was. The American dream is different for everyone.

This article’s main point is that the American dream is still alive. It never died, and people are just trying to fit in with the popular and rich. Many people think that money is what the American dream is all about and isn’t. People get distracted by what people say and by their actions. At the end of the article, the mom was looking at the pictures and remembered that the American dream was still there and she just needed to step away and look.
